Ouch, my head hurts..

You can still buy a Hamburger pan but Ed sold the company a long time ago to a company that outsources the parts manufacturing now.

Just wondering what the differences are between the HSR and the SLP Short Ram?

Re: 3 Third Gen SLP parts

Only about ?? SLP short rams made (just a guess) and no longer around.
HSR is being made and is cheap.
Both would have similar HP and not really much of a difference.

Wow, reading this makes me feel old...I never gave it a thought that so many of you guys are younger than your cars! Anyway, let me through a little more info in...my first job out of high school was in this little testing facility in my hometown. They guys I worked with were the ones who designed the dyno emissions test that was used till obd2 came out. Well one of those guys was an engineer named Chuck Jenckes. He worked for Ed Hamburger at SLP. We had 2 5.7 IROCs that were used in the design of the headers, runners, and much of the other stuff they made. That's how they were able to get the package epa certified. Heck, my 1st IROC had a hand built set of one of the first tri-y prototypes. I remember Chuck showing me a few time slips from one of the test cars...consistent 13.90s with all the engine bolt ons, stock converter and 3.23 gears! I also remember them bringing in an early Callaway twin to vette to work on getting it epa certified! If I'd have had any clue back then that I was involved in what is now 3rd gen "folklore", I would have taken pictures

I have the Hamburger oil pan on my 84 Camaro (with a '90 L98) - had to get it as the Vette pan won't fit our cars with the stock x-member...

Re: 3 Third Gen SLP parts

That short ram sure looks a lot like my McFarland intake minus the removable plenum

Anyone ever seen one? It looks like it's a tunnel ram base with a welded together top on there (welded to runners and TB mounting plate), that's exactly how callaway made their 100+ intake.

I had never seen that before. thanks for posting

100+ intake:

Yup, its the difference between single and dual CAI. There was also a single driver side box for TTAs which was just the driverside box from the dual CAI kit.

Nice collection of stuff!

My 1LE has the 3" cat back SLP exhaust (two on the left). Although I usually like my cars completely stock, I'm coming to realize these cars are a collection of stories, with each owner contributing to them - so - I think I'm going to leave it on.

The CAI pictured is for a Pontiac. The muffler is a replacement for an original SLP 2 OTL cat back. The original was flatter and didn't have the spot welds. I know this because I had mine replaced under warranty from SLP. My car backfired after messing with some wiring issues and popped the 94 original SLP muffler. I bought the last Y pipes and tips / gasket sets SLP had for their headers and cat back. Still have the T-ram and every accessory they offered along with the instructions to install and original boxes.

The TOL exhaust has a very distinctive sound, cant imagine a Banks sounds the same.

Re: 3 Third Gen SLP parts

I have never seen that stealth ram looking manifold before, not even in the ads during the day. GM / Mercruiser had one that looked like that back in the late 80's, but not SLP.

The guy that was tasked with the T-Ram design was Ryan Falconer. Interesting guy and if you can catch him in the office he will talk about the work he did for SLP. Look up Falconer Engineering for a reference to his work.

I have a SLP / Hamburger pan on my car also, leaks like a sieve. Cool, but wasn't worth the money. It's just a cut up poorly welded stock pan with a screen and painted red. I had to modify the screen and baffles to get a stock deep pick up to work with it.

Re: 3 Third Gen SLP parts

That muffler is the 3rd or 4th variation for the SLP totl. I have 1 of the very 1st setups from the 89 catalog.
I have talked with Ryan Falconer, nice guy, never really got any credit from SLP for the T-ram.

Is there a current part number for that MAF? Obviously not through SLP for OUR cars, but if it was a Porsche part, I'd imagine it's out there. ...on the other hand, if it WAS...I imagine we'd know. But can't hurt to ask :P

There is a number for it and it is out there but they have the Porsche tax on them... (Its from a 928s from what I've gathered)

Re: 3 Third Gen SLP parts

Does anyone have a catalog that shows what a part number 41020 ?
I'm sure it's from a 90-92 Tpi 350 manual trans I'm thinking corvette Bye looking at the timing tables ?

And a file I must have done a read on at one time 40054 ?
The 40054 resembles 90-92 350 automatic camaro/firebird.

Re: 3 Third Gen SLP parts

Just read this entire thread, love the history and collection of SLP parts! Would LOVE to get my hands on one of those dual SLP CAIs! Just picked up an L98 long block with SLP runners...it's out of a car that's competed in ESP Solo since 86 or 87. That car's engine was originally built by Lingenfelter and while that engine is long gone, I believe the car retained the induction system so I wonder if the runners are the older, original design. May have to pull them off to see!

The dual CAI that's in that picture is in my collection currently - stay tuned as it may not leave when the T-Ram car leaves.

All the hand built stainless mufflers I have seen have been center 3" in and center dual 2 1/2 out. The very early (factory looking) stuff had a offset 3" in and dual 2 1/2 offset out.

I used to have the full SLP 1.75 headers, y-pipe and cat back system on my car. The headers and Y-Pipe had to go when I found out that my AFR "angle plug" heads would not work with the SLP header.

I still have the over-axle, muffler and tail pipes on the car. The Muffler looks very much like the one in post #58.

I have a vague recollection that the muffler was supposed to have SS packing, not fiberglass. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
I ask because mine is REALLY loud and I wonder if it has slowly gotten louder over the last 20 years.

Re: 3 Third Gen SLP parts

I remember all the SLP parts available through GMPP and Summit back in the day. You could buy a T-Ram from Summit along with all the hardware.

My 91 GTA, bought from the original owner had the SLP parts installed by the dealer when new. The original owner's first drive had all the SLP parts already on the car. He never drove it stock!

It brings a smile to my face each time is starts, awesome sounding exhaust. My opinion, every GTA should've sounded like that from the factory.

When I bought the car in 95, I swore to keep it nice, and I have. I've put 9K miles on it in 23 years.

I almost traded it for a 96 WS6 TA hard top, but I couldn't do it at the last second.

I'll post pics of the motor, but will have to dig out the hard.

I ran the SLP 1 3/4 headers and AFR angle plug heads, no issues?

I'm not sure what the muffler packing is but I think mine have gotten a bit louder through the yrs too.

I also blew up the original SLP muffler. The replacement has the spot welds like you said.

I cut my original muffler open to repair it after it blew up. I was hoping to replace the output end of the case where it cracked. That muffler had FIBERGLASS packing.

As i understand it, you could order AFR heads with angle plugs OR L98 Angle Plugs.

Mine are not the L98 Angle. The #5 plug would not clear the header pipe. I've read of others using lawn mower plugs to make it work. I chose to switch to Hooker long tubes instead.

That is what I suspected. It really is a nice muffler, but after 22 years, it just doesn't muffle like it used to.

There are new mufflers out with straight through designs AND stainless packing. I think that I need to find something like that.

Ahhh yes, I think I remember that whole deal now. Fairly sure I had the L98 angle.

I have an SLP front y pipe which was briefly used on my 1989 5.7L GTA with single 3" catalytic converter. It could be used on any single 3" cat f body. Would consider selling.

Re: 3 Third Gen SLP parts

some of the info looks off like the head flow chart no way the iron f body head flows the same as the 113 alum vette on the exhaust or intake sides and 220 cfm with a 2.05 valve seems kinda low aswell

also the dyno of the short ram on a stock vette l98 making 290 hp when car craft may 1989 tested it on a l98 vette motor along with shorty headers it made 270 at 5k and 255 at 55k maybe slps results were with a dyno tune? although both test show the same 320 torque rating

Re: 3 Third Gen SLP parts

I have those books as well, The aluminum head and iron head pretty much have the same port (in stock form) iirc. Neither head is much to write home about these days.
Different, dynos, tunes, weather and a little "creative marketing" all have ways of messing with the final numbers.

about same on the intake side but the 113 had d port exhaust that i assumed flowed 150-160 cfm stock looking at the OP article again shows a square port exhaust could these be 128 heads? that would make more sense also can anyone confirm if these square port heads where used on the firehawks

Re: 3 Third Gen SLP parts

The 128s were used until 87 then 88 the D port came out. I'm 99% sure the 113 D ports were on the firehawks. Don't think it would matter much, supposedly the 113s were hand ported by SLP with bigger valves then shipped to the GM engine line for install on the long block that would then be shipped to SLP..

Re: 3 Third Gen SLP parts

From my 1990 GM PP catalog

91-2 3rdgen Firehawks used this longblock with SLP cam and ported 113 heads.

One of the best pictures I've seen of the early SLP catback. From my understanding, muffler and tails were made by a well known company. I have a over the axle pipe, muffler and tails. The muffler has super turbo stamped outward on it.

A good picture of the early SLP fiberglass air box.
