I've seen a lot of cars w/ round air cleaners that say they are TPI, I thought TPI cars had the silver plenum? Somebody help me, I'm confused!

 

ok.. let me try to help ya out.

TBI = Throttle Body Injection, this is a mix between carbed and fuel injection. it uses a round air cleaner like that on carbed engines.

TPI = Tuned Port Injection, this is fuel injection, the stock setup is a dual snorkle intake on camaro's or a box intake on FB & TA's at the front of the car.

maybe you got the two confused? I will get a picture for you so you can better understand

 

OK, this is a TPI setup on a FB or TA, the TPI setup on a camaro has a dual snorkle intake in the front instead of an air box.




TBI and carbed setup have the round air cleaner on top ONLY, not TPI.

Hey, thanx a lot guys, that clears it up. One other question though, what years did they make the TPI engines?

 

they started making the TPI engine in 85. TBI was later introduced.
