what is the proper way to fix chips in paints

I think theres a tech article on this, but I'm not sure and I'm too lazy to look. Get touch up paint, fill in the spots and sand smooth with 220 then if not smooth, paint them again. Once smooth wetsand with 400 then higher maybe and clearcoat. Wetsand the clearcoat with 2000. This is just a quick explanation, maybe someone else with more knowledge can go more in depth.
