Think of it this away; in most forms of racing you want the rear of the car to follow the front (like in NASCAR, Cart, IRL, and F1), but drifting is the opposite. Instead of having the rear follow the front, you want the rear to slide around (and keep it under controlled; i.e. a controlled slide). The best way I can think of to show an example is some type of dirt track racing (sprint cars). You want the back to slide out and keep up the speed. That is drifting.
