My Take on Stock vs. Custom
The majority of people on this board prefer a stock look, with the typical changes being 5 spoke wheels, factory type hoods and spoilers (something that came on another model or generation), and maybe window tint. Interior mods are pretty much limited to 4th gen seats, white face gauges, and maybe a tach. Engine compartment appearance is somewhat subdued, with a little chrome or polished aluminum added but usually no use of additional color other than spark plug wires. At a show, most of these cars would be classed as mild or semimodified.
There are a few here who like to go a little further, but still use mostly stock body parts with a few custom touches thrown in...shaving, removal of emblems and body moldings, and maybe a nonstock color. In this group you'll see a lot more diversity in the wheel and tire selection, beyond the traditional 5 spokes. The interiors of these cars aren't much different than those of the first group, but you'll usually find more stereo equipment, use of body color in the interior, and maybe some neon. The engine compartments will usually have a lot more use of paint and polish, colored wire looms, etc. Most would be considered modified to custom, depending on the extent of the body mods.
Finally, you have the F-bodies with custom front bumper covers, modified or homebuilt hoods, reverse opening hoods or doors, large rear wings, wild paint schemes, etc. Other than the exterior, they're very similar to the 2nd group though they're more likely to have video monitors, neon, and full custom interiors. Often these cars are unfinished, due to the amount of time and money required to build one.
This may surprise some people on this board , but of all the project cars I have ever owned ( 1957 Chevy Belair, 1963 Nova SS, 1986 Buick Regal T-type, 1994 and 1995 Z28s, 1991 Mustang LX 5.0 coupe, 1990 Mustang GT convertible, 1997 Camaro SS), the only one that doesn't fit completely in the FIRST category is the 63 Nova SS. The body molding and all emblems were shaved. The rest were all very traditional, at least in appearance. All were modifed for performance, though some a lot more than others. After 17 years of building and modifying cars, and looking at all types at shows...street rods, musclecars, lowriders, minitrucks, sport compacts, exotics...I can appreciate something in all of them. Just because I'd never build a Honda Civic or a bagged Toyota truck doesn't meant that I can't learn something from it that might apply to my own car.
My next project, as some of you know, will be more in the last category (solely because of body mods and wheels/tires), other than the fact that it won't have a huge import style wing. Redraif's car is more in the second category...not as radical as people seem to think, esp considering that there is only one body part on the car that didn't come stock on some F-body.
Between the two cars, lots of people on this board seem to think I hate stock appearing cars, or think their owners are idiots for not modifying them more. Hardly. Not only have a I owned plenty of them , I worked in the restoration parts industry for 7 years. Admittedly I'm a little jaded from the experience...I have seen a lot of really nice cars...and it takes a lot to get my attention. Once you know what a correctly restored, or nicely restified car looks like, there are no surprises. Either its correct, or its not. Either its clean, or its not. Either its put together well, or its not. I applaud the people who build or preserve these cars, but its not for me. I want my cars to run, brake, handle, and yes, look better than the factory ever intended. I want to use components because they're the best ones suited for the job, not because they're what was available when the car was new or what some focus group preferred 15 years ago. It wasn't cost effective to put 14" front brakes on a 3rd gen, or a carbon fiber dash panel, or even something as simple as a manual transmission that could take the torque of a TPI 350, but that doesn't mean that I can't. And after changing all that, I don't want ANYONE to confuse the car with stock. I want to change enough so that its obvious changes have been made, but not so much so that the car isn't recognizable for what it is.
Sorry for the long post, but I felt my position needed to be explained. Comments, opinions, etc are welcome...all I ask is that this not be turned into a flame war. Redraif and I have been attacked time and time again, and I have attacked back. I've had enough of that. Think about what you're posting and what the result could be before you post it, and I'll do the same. If we all showed each other a little respect, and kept the mean spirited, childish comments to ourselves, this could be a much better board.

Usually i know better than to even get in to a thread like this, and im already going to claim this rely as (IBTL) because theres no way i think the Mods will let it stay open, lol.
I cant speak for everyone, but *my* take on it is this.
You can classify auto enthusiasts in to as many groups as you want, but what it really comes down to is that people customize based on what they think intrinsically looks good.
As an architecture student, a professor once told me "taking a risk can be a good thing in the design world, but if youre going to take that risk, suceed. Theres no merit in taking a risk and failing. That being said, (and i only claim to speak for myself when i say this), i do not shun customizing beyond the 4th gen rims and cowl hoods, nor do i feel that any decent modification must have originated on an F body of some year.
What it comes down to is the overal flow of the design, most of which some of the modifications in question do NOT contribute too. Custom front bumpers? Original hoods? Wheels other than 5 spokes? Sure, im all for it, when its done right. The front bumper on the Suncoast TA that was in Pontica Performance is a great example. If someone from the board had integreted round fog lights in to a TA bumper, i still would have loved it. But bumpers that look out of place because the dont FLOW, such as a modified IROC bumper chopped up to look like its feeding an intercooler (import style) doesnt look good at all on a 3rdgen. The same can be said for a large metal rear wing. It just doesnt flow right.
Sure its different. But at the risk of sounding rude, every time i take a crap, its something [i]different[/i.] that doesnt mean its worth keeping around, or even looking at.
People think different things look good, end of story. Our cars belonged to a time period in the past, not the new techno crazed preppy image that has accompanied the 6 spoked, lowered, fart piped, VTECed cars of this decade. They have different styles.
And just to keep everyone open to everyone elses viewpoints, realize we dont all like the same things, and as much as you dont care if we like certain things, we're allowed our voice of expression as much as you are youre expression of taste. You dont care if we dont like it, but we dont care if you care, lol. (im not starting a fight, just hoping you understand).
I like my car with a cowl hood, subtle spoiler, video screens on the inside, and 5 star Rims. You dont. That doesnt make you more original. That doesnt mean i look better. Its ALL subjective. In YOUR eyes it makes you more original, and in my eies it makes me look better. SUB-JECT-IVE.

I agree with most points you guys posted...but just think....
how much more free time you could have had without typing such long-winded discussions of your personal views on automotive taste
Truth be told, we're on a messageboard. People come and go like clothing trends, and whether or not I respect your opinion is meaningless. The point of an online community is a meeting place for people who need a place to feel that they are in a group...part of a common good or interest. If your interests/ideas clash with another, then rest assured that you're both here for the same purposes. Be happy. Live long. And don't become consumed with what others may thing of what you're doing.

Who cares, what others think about modding cars. Really, I mean I'll voice my opinion till I die, if I do/don't like something. But, really does it matter, it's just my opinion. If I say something looks dumb, that's what I think, but there's a good chance a ton of other people think the same, still doesn't really matter. But that's how the real world is. There will be a lot of people that will think the way I do, and there will be a lot of people that think differently.
now i'm just rambling, damn this thread.
oh, some cars should be hacked up and modified, cause they came chitty lookin from the factory, however 3rd Gens did not, and need little improvement.

??? If I was really worried about what people thought about what I was doing, or looking for approval, I'd do something "safe" and buy/build a clean traditional looking F-body. Some people here think I hate their stock appearing cars because I'm into custom stuff now, and that's not correct. I'll stand behind my opinions and not care who agrees with them, but on the other hand I don't want my opinions misconstrued either.

I often use the word "custom" quite liberally and generically. When I referer to custom, I usually mean the body work in which something can not be bought from an ordinary parts store and usually has to be specially fabricated. I am all for a stock body, but if I were to own it, like LT1guy said, I need a little more. I always want to have the wildest looking whatever it is just so that other people won't have the same thing as me. If everyone's house in my neighborhood was white, I would change the color of my house to blue or something. I don't like to copy other people's trends. I may incorporate some ideas, but not the entire car. A few years ago I used to love those tricked Hondas and such. Now a can't stand them because the people that spent months making a uniquely customized car - The same look can be achieved by copy cats with a bolt ons, which devalues the efforts of the guy who put so much work into his ride. At least with an Fbody, there is little danger of that happening because there are so few body extras for our cars besides hoods and wings. If I became a multi millionaire and bought a Lamborghinni, you can bet I will add some unique body work to it. How many non stock Lamborghinnis do you see, let alone a stock one?

:sillylol:There is like a handfull of custom guys on here and the rest have tasteful modifications to their rides. Unless u make your own custom ground effects or add a wing to your ride then your aren't a true customizer. :sillylol:

I didn't offer my opinion in my earlier post, and now I'm feeling left out. Not that anyone cares, but this is what I think. I do prefer the look of a nicely restored factory original car to that of a customized ride. That does not mean that I don't like customized cars at all. I can appreciate the time, skill, and artistic vision it takes to create a high quality custom car. Saying that all customized cars are ugly/worthless/crappy, is utterly ridiculous. You just take a look at the work of customizers like George Barris, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, and Boyd Coddington and tell me that their work wasn't plain and simply awesome. What does make me cringe is when a weekend warrior heads to Wal-Mart and buys a can of body filler and a fiberglass repair kit and goes about making a mess of an otherwise decent-looking car. I can't stand to see a butchered customizing attempt on any car, much less on an F body; a car that I happen to be a fan of. I just scratch my head when I try to imagine what the guy thought his hatchet-job was going to turn out like. Do these types really think they can achieve quality results with no experience and a fifty-dollar budget? It's also ridiculous that guys who spend a weekend bolting on an aluminum erector-set spoiler, and funny-looking tail lights complain that, "you just don't like custom cars man", when someone has a negative opinion of their car. In my opinion, you have to have something that no one else has to truly call it "custom". You don't have a customized car just because you picked a body kit from a catalog, and put on a set of wheels. You have to put in a lot more effort than that to claim that label in my book. Take Redraif's Firebird for example. It isn't exactly what I'd have done, but she and Joe have put a lot of time, effort and money into that car. You can say "it isn't my taste", or "I don't like it", but you can't say it's a crappy car. She has done some high-quality work on that car, and it shows.

I just want to mention that when I make fun of "custom cars" on here, I make fun of the goof ***** that Matt is talking about. The chopped up ground effects, clear taillights and giant spoilers along with other tasteless body mods make me sick. Now what they did to that GT 500 in gone in 60 seconds. I like.
Of course, would that be called custom or "stock look" since it didn't have chopped up ground effects and a bigger wing?

What a lot of people don't realize is that most of us "stock *****" don't necessarily hate highly modded cars. It's just that the more modified a car becomes, the more the customizer's "taste" becomes an issue. Like you said, when it comes to a stock restoration, it's either right or it's not. With a highly customized car, it becomes a matter of personal taste. I seem to be considered one of the most vocal stock *****, yet I've seen plenty of highly modified cars that I'd kill for. Some of them just get it right. Unfortunately, in my eyes, most of them get it very wrong. The great thing about stock cars is that a difference of opinion is less of an issue.
The difference between a drop-dead georgous custom and a butt ugly waste of a car is often no more than who's forming the opinion.

Thanks for calling my ideas gay, that means a lot comming from you. Some people like them and some people don't. I just like to see what certain things look like. I do those "custom cars" to find out the limits of what people think is tasteful or ugly. Since there are so many thirdgens out there that look alike, I like seeing some that stand out from the rest. It doesn't have to be anything wild or drastic, that's just the style I like.
I can get along with guys who like the stock style. I like the stock style too, but I don't want to see all stock looking cars.

A few customs look VERY good..and others make me want to shoot myself in the foot, or something equally as rash..

I just straight up dont care anymore. You guys say what you want. Its just a waste of time arguing. A bunch of jackasses with imports do whacked appearance mods trying to go for a certain look so its illegal for anyone with a domestic to like that look as well. So I guess the ricers should control what I do and dont like huh? Just because they tried something and messed up horribly now its just impossible for anyone to do anything remotely similar and have it look nice. Its just dumb. I'll make my car look the way I want and I dont care what anyone on this website thinks. And no that dosnt mean I'm gonna go put on big wings and lights everywhere. I happen to like the look of slammed cars on huge wheels with rubberband tires. Its a personal preferance. Nobody is right or wrong. Just because I dont like your style or you dont like my style dosnt make either of us 'wrong.' We just have different tastes.

I really don't care about the bashing about my car, i take it cause i respect what other people have to say.......I've made fun of plenty people in my life and don't expect for me to the exception to the rule..........
Although the only opinion that really matters to me if it's my girlfriend commenting about my car........
Making fun of people is a way of life, you can't do anything about it.........

Opinions are like @ssholes, everybody has one and some stink more than others. I am sure that everybody that has modded there cars can take anything this board can dish out. Look at RAIF, I am sure it took a whie before people started liking the car. And I bet there are alot out there that don't. I can say there are a few things that I wouldn't do to my car, but even those mods I can say nice job and craftsmanship. There is nothing wrong with a car looking stock, and nothing wrong with somebody having fun with there car. When I see an '63 Impalla I think of what they used to look like with out the hydros on it. But some of the cars look great after they are done. Some like stock and other hate it with a passion. To each there ow, and what makes me a better person to cont to bash or even stick up for them. As most of you know some people stuck up for them self at first and then found out that it doesn't change anything so they just move on and forget about it. And now some people want to stick up for them again?? If they don't stick up for them selfs there is a reason, so don't feel like you have too. Everybody cuts up on Mark and a few others for being a post *****, and last I checked Mark and others still do it. Why, because they can and don't care what others think. Wich in turn makes them a better person.
In the end when people start bashing and others start sticking up for other the post goes off topic and gets locked causing the question or info at hand to be lost. If somebody bashes, let them who cares, as you can see it didn't stop Raif and others from what they love doing and that is being different.

My point for posting is to say that in 99 when I added power windows and door locks to my car I never imagined I would end up with a "Custom Car". Sure I though shaving was a neat concept and I even added the door popper kit in 99. I used to say I would love to make it a show car. One day I followed the dream I had had from the day I got the car. I started to play with ideas. Honestly I still do not think of the car as a "custom".
I always thought "custom" was creating a whole new unique car. I still see my car as a Firebird. Its recognizable as such. To me a custom was not something some girl with no training could do in her basement and carport, but that is what I did. I saw Customs as cars that were built by pros and shops. Either you had been taught, or paid someone to do it. I just tweaked little things. But as I showed, I realized its the overall change that creates a custom. Enough things have been altered (not "bolted" on) in a way that some one could not buy the parts, or even pay a shop to do. Nothing on the car was a simple bolt on and because of that is is a custom. Though in all honesty, in my eyes this car will never be a true custom. I don't plan on taking it that far.
But yes, it is a matter of your work being judged by someone with a differing taste. But that is how "art" is. It is "subjective" as said above. And I see customizing as a form of art.
Aluminum spoilers, oversized exhaust, stickers, and store bought lights do not a custom make!

I like it all! Bring on the shaved handles and emblems, the suicide doors, the reverse opening hoods! I really like LT1Guy's idea about the targa top and now I want to do it too. I think that changing a car to make it different is great, as long as it doesn't get too out of control and start to make the car a ghost of it's former self. It's good to see (usually) a thirdgen that is different than every other thirdgen out there. Isn't that what keeps us into cars? I do have to say that aluminum wings are hidious though

Hey shannon, Lt1 guy, Iroc2nv, devianb, and the rest of you all know who you are....
I personally don't care for the custom look as much as the stock **** approach like jim, but I respect anyone who is cool with my ideas.
Ever be hanging out with friends and one of 'em does something stupid and you feel embarrassed for being there friend? Yeah, well, that's how this board makes me feel most of the time.
Most of the Technical boards like the TPI board which I frequent a lot, are OK. That's because it's about sharing knowledge and experience with each other. This board is for the kids. (this is where the kids **** and moan for me saying that). This board was a good idea gone horribly wrong.
I wish there was a board where we could actually discuss appearance and detailing without the negativity.
I had a bunch of positive things to say when I read this post at lunch, but when I got off of work, I now see that it has been ruined like the most of the other threads started here.
It's not the opinions that I don't like. It's that good threads only last about 10 or 15 posts at the most, before they are taken over.

See, i dont even picture you as the stock ****. The Stock ***** that irritate me are the ones who say a car sucks if the headlight pockets arent black, the pinstriping aint right, and my car isnt number 242556 of 285638586 built that year. A fart in their direction (MHO, of course)

I will agree to a point here. There is one thing good about failing, it makes you learn. Thats how you get an idea to work, trial and error. No one comes out of the box knowing how to make things work. Though I'm refering to the physical idea of "building" the vision. I will agree that the vision has to suceed for there to be anything truly accomplished.

I modded a tailight on my firebird already. It looks like ***. I learned, but theres no way that fu<x>ckers goin on the car
I dont think this threads anywhere near destroyed yet, most of us are being civilized. Only two or three came in already on the defense, and it happens <shrug>

Hey LT1 Guy,
Instead of using the word "custom" I will use the term "modified" to describe a car with bolt ons onto a stock body such as a TA with a cowl hood and 4thgen wing. I won't use the term custom unless it is a one off design that is not produced by any company.

My only technical knowledge for this board is design concepts, but when someone asks for an opinion, I say I like this and don't like that and I don't label something as gay, rice, *******, etc. I agree with you CrazyHawaiian, when it comes to posting useless stuff, I am certanitely guilty of it. I should be ashamed of myself and I will try not to do it again. I try to post something relevant to the topic, but sometimes I go off on tangant.

Well, this forum requires a little less "tech" and a little more "creativity". I didn't mean so much that I don't like the "non-technical" info as much as the "non-relavent" info. Opinions are good to have, but we have to respect other peoples opinion too. I didn't see the "supra" post, but that's exactly the crap I'm talking about.
To keep with the topic, I do have to say this. I remember a time when our thirdgens were almost the very top of the food chain. There were some quick turbo buicks, and a vette or two. But day in and day out, it was us versus the mustang. Back and forth, looks and performance it was a good day. Today, the "cool" cars are the imports, SUV's are comin' from the factory with more HP than a g92/L98 and they don't even make f-bodies anymore. The General has conceded the King of the Hill to the Viper, and now even our big brother vette can't hang with the stang.(although that's still up for debate). Point is that our cars are not cool. I think they are, as do most of you, but no one else does. Why do we have to bitch amongst ourselves? We might as well enjoy our own company right?...not complain about someones ideas.

Oh and for the record...no one has ever seen my 1st attempt at a modified dash cluster panel. It is the reason I test on trashed yard pieces first!

Like in the thread about Supra style headlamps, some guys just posts something like 'Oh another rice thread' and thats it. What use is that, other than just starting flame wars and putting people down. Theres no problem with having an opinion but there is a problem with people just posting useless stuff to start flame wars. Posters should be put on probation for doing this over and over. Maybe even banned from a certain sections of the boards (not the whole board) for a certain ammount of time because they dont have any usefull tech info, just random stupid remarks ... all the time.

And if someone does not ask your opinion take the hint! There have been too many times I have replied to a post to help someone with a problem and the post turns into a flame war over mine & others cars. I have seen some ridiculous results over a simple thread. Honestly, I'm quite impressed at how behaved this one has remained.

It just makes it easier for those of us who want to explore the idea to trade info.

This is certainly an odd thread. Instead of posting our thoughts on Appearance and Detailing, we have posted our thoughts on other people's thoughts of Appearance and Detailing. How confusing.
For the most part, people who post stuff pertaining to name calling, rice throwing, and other such nonsense are newbies still. They have yet to come to the understanding that you (as customizers or modders or stock *****) could care less. And until we stop letting new members join the site, this will continue to happen. So what good does discussing the matter do? It further serves to separate and divide us. It defines thos who care and those who don't, those who ***** and those who don't, and those who modify and those who don't.
I'll restate my previous post because I think most should read it again. "In the end...it doesn't even matter."

Hey, I bet your next attempt will be better though! Thats what my point is. Sometimes you have to try it and if it comes out bad don't use it, but try the next idea. Your attempt taught you something. Even if you don't try again, it gives you an learned appreciation for what others go thru. You learned about the materials and what it takes to work on them.
Oh and for the record...no one has ever seen my 1st attempt at a modified dash cluster panel. It is the reason I test on trashed yard pieces first!

The way I see it, Its your money so do what every you want with your car. If you like it then it dosent mater what anyone thinks.
I know its nice to hear someone say "hey nice car". I like to hear it too. I can see the work, time and effort someone has done to a car even if it is a import. And for that I give them a thumbs up. Even if its a stock car, it sill takes time and effort to keep it clean and in good condition.
So If I run across a car that I dont like, I just dont comment on it. And If I do for some reason have to comment on it. I keep it breif and say it with a little tact.
cars are built for different reasons. "just my thoughts", You dont build a gutted drag car to take to shows, you dont build a custome low rider to take to a off road jamborie, and you dont do ground off restoration with correct suspension marks and colors to take it to the dragstrip and get rubber all over it. Then you have daily drivers and trailer queens.
In the end, All that matters is that you are happy with your car. and If people want to express there opinion then they should do it tastefully.

Yeah, that is so very true. If I do something to my car and a few people don't like it, I will keep it, but if everyone laughs or makes fun of it, I will change it because I don't like to be laughed at all the time. Here is a good example: I have a hot pink Nautica polo shirt that I wear sometimes. A couple of guys laugh at me, but I like the shirt so much that I wear it anyways. Besides, people get used to it. I think if I did not look like a angry heroine junkie, more people would make fun of that shirt. That shirt is just so darn comfortable.

Just to clarify my own view of it and not my view of this thread...
I have respect for anybody and everybody. This includes ricers, offroading hicks, modifying guys (like yourself LT1guy), and anybody else....including those that drive minivans while talking on a cell phone. My respect is conditional though. Respect me, I'll respect you. That's how it works. That's how it should also work on the messageboard here.

When 2 hondas go to tech inspection at the track with basic bolt ons and talk like they are right out of the fast n furious and think their rides are gonna run a 10 second because there air filters add 20hp and there afpr add 10-15 and there mufflers add 20hp and when they add it up they get a ridiculous number and think they can actually run yet they haven't run at the track once in their life and then they turn a mid 16 in the 1/4 mile and have an excuse for it...that is not an ethusiast, that is a f-cking retard. Or the kid who pulls up next to me in a 79 T/A with 22 inch chrome rims and velet crush interior with some many tach's I don't know how he could watch everyone of them and then tries to race my peice of sh*t LO3 and then loses...that is not cool, they ruin the scene. Along with the kids with strobe lights and body kits who think if their stereo is up the loudest or if their car has more red or yellow on it then it rules the entire race scene is just sad to me. You won't get an ounce of respect for me or anyone else who has been in the hobby way before that stuipd f-cking movie came out and all these *** awfal hack jobs started wacking away with "custom" ideas on their rides. Yeah, some look alright, most look like **** and aren't even painted yet.
