Looks great To bad hand polishing cant get inbetween the raised lines. 6" polishing wheels on bench grinders are the only way to go. Heres some of my old work I did for Bimma86.

Now I didnt just start doing this one day and was awesome at it. I've spent almost a year in the Street & Performance polishing shop where I learned every thing. Most things you learn from polishing cant be expressed with words reall good but with practice and trial and error. Hehe thats basically how I did learn to polish. You do plan on spending some cash right? No not to pay me to tell you how to polish. LOL The materials you will need to get can cost some money: Bench grinder, da sander, die grinder, and materials that you will need.
LOL, polishing is a lost art but with time and practice you can come up with some awesome techniques and time saveings procedures. Go to http://www.caswellplating.com for most of the supplies and http://www.hobbyplating.com/ also go to get a die grinder http://www.handsontools.com/store/l...category_id=201
This is a little long but it basically gives you the nessicary information to get started and what supplies you need.
Never mix different greases on the same wheel. Bench grinders will last a whole lot longer if you keep both shafts balanced "have a 6" polishing wheel on each shaft". I've always polished using the sisal wheels with Tripoli grease to get into tight spots and to go over my da sanding marks. I usually do that until all da marks are gone and the part has a dull shine to it. Then I would use a 6" sprial sewn cloth wheel with white color compound. Do that until you get a good shine. The white compound is good for getting the shine into the aluminum and it can be used with the 6 loose buff for final buffing and getting the best shine from your parts. And that save on some cash instead of having to buy 3 different polishing compounds. http://www.hobbyplating.com/wheel.htm this is where I sometimes get my polishing compounds from. The prices are good and the bars last for some time with care http://www.bright-works.com/store/html/comp.html. You can also get some polishing compounds here too.I get polishing wheels from
http://www.bright-works.com/store/html/buff.html
I like the prices for their wheels, I get the loose buff and the spirals sewn wheels, and the sisal wheels. You can also get sisal wheels from http://www.tptools.com/prod_list_di...ing%2FDetailing I like this sites sisal wheels better than the BrightWorks.
I get the sanding drums from Brightworks. You need to get arbors for the sanding rolls to attach to. I always get the box of 100 rolls and the grits I always get are 120, and 320. http://www.bright-works.com/store/html/rolls.html
http://www.handsontools.com/store/l...category_id=201 They have a variety of diegrinders for the sanding rolls. I use the Astro 1/4" Drive Extended Shaft Die Grinder for 70 dollars. If it ever siezes up I just buy another.
And with everything else in life it just takes patience and practice to get good at something, just because the results you were hoping to get dont show up in the first try dont get discouraged. Some aluminum has "gas" tiny air bubbles in the aluminum. Theres absolutely nothing you can do to get rid of this. You will know when you see it. Good luck,

Michael O

your polishing looks great, I have polished my plenum and the dist cover, I have started using the black emery, it doesnt look to bad, shinny but it has what looks like sanding marks from the buffing wheel. This is my first time doing this and im have fun doing it, provided everything turns out well I hope to polish all my aluminum parts How much polishing compound am I supposed to be using on the wheel? and are you supposed to wash the parts after polishing with one compound? I tried to use the tripolli coumpound with a new wheel after I did the black emery and it turned my buffing wheels black and the finish got really dull, Im not sure if im doing any of this right, but I have lots of time to get the shinny finish im looking for right.

What kind of wheel did you use the tripoli on? Sisal wheel, sewn cotton wheel,or loose buff wheel?

I think its a sewn buffing wheel. Its a 2 1/2" buffing wheel with a 1/4 inch shank, it was the only one i could find to be used on a drill. I found this trucking store that sold a 6" wheels for a grinder but it seemed to be a little over kill for the size of my project, the sales guy was telling me that they use the 6" inch on cemi gas tanks and large parts like that.

85SportCoupeto89RS, I will have to "contract" you out this spring on my intake, and possibly a few other components on this new engine.

You use to work at s&p, here in north little rock?? You may be closer then I thought before!!!

IROC_5796, the sewn cotton wheel will not work properly with the black grease its too abrasive of a compound to make aluminum shine. Normally those compounds are used on a sisal wheel. I would use your white grease on your sewn cotton, and loose bufifing wheel. Its much cheaper to use the with grease on both sewn, loose wheels. You'll get the same results even if you use the tripoli with the sewn cotton wheel. I only use the 6" wheels on a bench grinder, a da sander with 180,320 grit, a die grinder with 120,400 grit.

Do you polish by hand 84customZ28? Yep their bars To use the white rouge you need the polishing wheels, bench grinder, and the polishing compounds. Be prepared to spend some cash www.caswellplating.com I still have to build my polishing shop before I can buy all the stuff I need to get up and polishing again. Freakin uncooperative weather.

Well....for small pieces, yes, I polsih by hand...but when I do my plenum..I'm going to use a buffing wheel. But..I'm keeping the Plenum on my car.....so..I guess white rouge is out of the question? Or...would I be able to use it on a buffing wheel?? (like a polisher...high speed)

Your going to sand, and then polish with a hand drill? You can do it like that with a cotton spiral sewn buffing wheel and the white grease, and follow it up with a loose buff with the white grease. I do strongly suggest you take off your plenum when you polish it, you're back is going to kill you once your done. Not to mention the possible mess you'll have under the hood.

I'm not going to be using a drill buffer......I'm using a polishing buffer....like used to buff paint....I would take the plenum off....but..I'm not much of a mechanic..and I'm not sure if I could get it back together....pretty sad huh..lol..
