Painting"NEW" wheels

OK, I'm lookin at getting some zq8 wheels. They're the machined aluminum finish with the painted accents....completely clearcoated. I want to paint the accents a different color, but I hate to strip the entire wheel. Can I scuff over the painted accents and paint'em? Do I have to strip the WHOLE wheel? What do I do? Normally I'd just strip the whole wheel, but they'd be brand new, and I'd hate to ruin the factory finish...but if it's gotta be done, it's gotta be done.

If it was me, I would just tape over the areas you want to protect, then sand the areas to be painted as best I could with different grits while wet until i was satisfied, then paint it. But I am not the expert on this, I just do things the easiest way possible.
