It's time to decide about Exhaust Tips for Next Spring

As many of you know..I've been in the market for a set of new exhaust tips. I'm REALLY going towards a set of 4th gen stainless tips like these:

Since I'll be going with a much shorter tip..I will also need new tailpipes coming from the muffler. So...would 2 1/2 tailpipes be alright? Or should I shop around to see if 2 3/4 is available?

Here are a few pictures of my exsisting tips..which are alright..but..I dont think the fit the style I'm going for..and they stick out to much...AND the seem to dull really fast because they are chome plated and not stainless.

BTW..please excuse the black stains on the carpet..

either tuck those in or get rid of the tips all together.I like the cars better where you cant see the tips or exhaust , but ive grown fond of the 4th gen ones i have.

your tips look good nolan...don't take this the wrong way..but..it seems like they would fit a little bit better with the 91-92 Z28/RS rear bumper a bit better...and would also flow better. Your rear bumper kind of "rolls up" and the tips are exposed a bit more. But they still look good

I always believe that tips should not go past the bumper/bumper cover...

That being said, your car is freaking nice.

I just saw a blue RS last night down by the dayton mall w/ fourth gen tips. It was getting dark so i don't know if they were stainless or not, but it was still very cool looking.

I say go for those

Personally, I'm partial to a double, single tip setup. One pipe on either side, barely protruding past the rear bumper.

I don't care much for the 4th gen tips, but those might look good on your car. The double tips aren't bad, except yours stick out too far. I think it would look great if you pulled them up and in more.

The angle shot makes it look like they stick out a foot but they only protrude about an inch from the bumper.

In all three of the shots, it looks like they stick out too far for my tastes. Personally, I like them flush with the bumper or tucked under. Here is an old pic of mine, but they haven't changed:

I think if you do it just like willie set-up it looks good! If they stick out any more than his, I don't like the look!

I agree that if the 4th gen tips are installed to far out..or are to low...they look horrible. Now...if the are tucked way under...and flush with the bumper....they look great..they have more of a factory appearance that way.
I'm just trying to get away from any type of round tip....they are just getting way to common around here...time for something different. And BTW the tips that I have right now are quad 3 1/2 inch tips...with "Y" pipes...all custom made.

another thing I thought about was...how much of a gap should be between the back bumper and the exhaust tips? With the 4th gens...I want them as close as possible...to get that snug fit....I wouldn't think they would get that warm...but..i dunno..I could be wrong..

I think so too...BUT...I posted a different picture of that car up above...and at that angle...they look kind of goofy. I think his maybe be hanging a little to low..and out a little far. Here is a picture of how they would kind of look...

Another thing to think about is that...my car has been lowered...and I think the tips will blend in much better since its been lowered..

What about Borla tips? I'm thinking about getting some of those, myself..
Thats what im thinking about getting.. but i will have to have them tucked flush with the bumper because the exhaust system i have (dynomax true dual 2 1/4) has both of the exits on the driver's side...

EDIT:: I may not get em, tho... cause of the whole $60 price tag per tip

Well...I ordered the 4th Gen Tips...not sure when I'll be getting them...and they won't be installed until next spring or summer. I'm trying to get away from the whole "round tip" style. Just way to common around here. Don't get me wrong...the look good...just not the style I'm looking for. I'll give the 4th gen style a try...if I don't like them...I'm sure I can figure something else out

wow, actually it looks awesome with no tips! Come to think of it, you really couldnt see Kandieds exhaust in many of his pic angles and that made it look really nice

I've been trying to decide what tips I want on my car, too when I do the new exhaust in the spring and I think I like the 4th gen stainless as well. Also, like everyone here says I think they'd only look good if they were snug with the bumper and didn't stick out, but is it possible to put them too close to the bumper and melt/warp it?

I was wondering about that too. Right now...my exhaust tips get a little warm...but..I don't think they get warm enough to warp the urethane bumper. Anyone else?

You probably wont have a problem with them messing up/ warping your rear bumper. Mine are just under the lip of the bumper and i have had no problems. I can barely fit my finger between the tip and the bumper.

84customZ28... have you thought about slash-cutting the 4th-gen tips? That would make them fit a world better than the way they come, IMO.

that's something I REALLY thought about...and I wish an aftermarket company would produce a set like that...

slash-cutting with the longer end closer to the car or away from the car?

I like the tips that come with the Banks cat back with the 4th gen muffler set up.

No laughing at the paint peeling off the bumper. Stoopid paint.

i got to thinkin...when I go to have the tips installed...I won't have to get a whole new muffler will I? I cut the old tips off...and there isn't enough pipe to install the new 4th gen tips. So, I figured that I coud just have some new tailpipes from the muffler installed too. But how are they going to weld them on? Because if they cut the exisiting tailpipes off..how can theyy weld the new tail pipes on? because they would just butt up....I'll get a picture to explain...

Get a tailpipe expander at your local auto parts store. I believe Autozone has them as a rent-a-tool.
