somethin a little different
well everyone that doesnt use HVAC usually just shaves the firewall or puts a peice of stainless over it but i wanted to take a diff approach so i used a non ac box and had every hole shaved on it to give it a smooth look but to still fill up the space on the firewall. it will be attached with heavy duty double sided tape made for body moldings etc. theres still body work to do to it and the finish product will be gloss black. sneak peek...

smoothing the firewall and having it look right is not as easy as you think. theres a lot of welding involved thats going to warp the **** out of the surrounding metal, then you have to grind the welds out, probably shrink and stretch the metal to get it some what straight. juice it and spend a lot of time sanding it out so the finish product isnt all wavey and ****ty looking.
plus i think it looks too empty with no box in that corner. and as already mentiond the way i did it theres still the option to go back to having AC and factory style heat.
me and my dad already put A LOT of time into my bay with smoothing things out and painting.

Yes I know how to smooth a firewall and you wont warp anything if you do it right. You go around doing small tach welds cooling each one with a wet rag it takes sometime but for me the little things are what stand out. Guess you could never restore a old rusted car cause it takes alot more then somethin like that. I just didnt understand that if your redoing the whole car thats why. I guess ill leave the undercoating on my floor pans also cause its a pain in the *** to scrape it all off with a torch. I love that blue your using though.

you guess i couldnt restore an old car becaue i dont want my firewall shaved? thats awesome logic right there. sorry pal but ive done a lot of "restoration" on my car including sandblasting the rear inner fender wells, cutting out rot and welding in patch panels, to sandblasting the entire rad support, both trays and any other rust i found in the engine bay as well as welding every unused hole and smoothing out both sides of the radiator support, both strut towers, & both frame rails. or how about the underneath of my car that ive taken down to the bare metal, where every speck of rust was sandblasted or cut out and replaced.
maybe you should think twice before you run your mouth to people about their abilities just because they have a different taste or opinion then you do.
im sure i could pick out a few things on your ride that i dont like but i definitly wouldnt be a ***** and tell you your incapable because you did somethin im not cool with.
Im sorry but you started the ***** comment and sand blast and welding in little rust spots isnt hard try welding on a quarter panel then getting it strait I just like how you assume i didnt know the work involded in smoothing the firewall. Then you said it was hard work well is it suppose to be easy then neone could do it is what i was trying to say. Neway i dont care its just the internet so have fun later. Wasnt being a ***** was just trying to get ur reasoning or to help out.

oh you mean like doing this...
well dude with your reasoning i should go out and shave my antenna, door handles, locks, emblems, etc etc etc. i dont want my firewall shaved i stated that. i stated why i did what i did but like many people it was easier for you to reply then to read the original post. you could have just said you dont like it but instead you go "why not smooth it out" and i gave you a completely legitimate reason, got it? i dont give a **** what you think is hard work or what you think people need to live up to to be accepted as "restoration competant"

Easy now you don't want to make the boy wet himself now.
BTW my 13 year old nephew could repair that A-pilar. My 4 year old will be up to your abilaty in a year or two.
That sure was a good spankin Spdfrk1990.

I had some input about shaving the firewall but I get the feeling that you wont like what I'm gonna say so I won't comment on it. Good job on that non ac box, lookn good. As long as your happy with the final look, thats all that matters. I'm ghetto, I used the top of an old panasonic vcr unit, cut it to fit, riveted it on, and painted the engine bay black. If it didnt say "ANASONIC" backwards and upsidedown, you probably wouldnt even notice it. LOL

Even if it was say, a 55 chevy, with that extensive repair it won't be worth much more than a 85 chevy.

First of all he made the first attack. Second of all PLEASE read the rest of my posts and you will clearly see that I have never flamed anyone (maby 82 firebird but I know him from around town).
I was mearly trying to let Spdfrk1990 know that he had proved his point. I also never used any foul language or discriminatory remarks so in retrospect I was only defending myself.
thank you jojo22

Just because you dont like the way a guy mods HIS car, doesn't mean you list all the reasons he should have modded it a different way. If this was a dictatorship, and I was the dictator, I'd call you all retarded and tell you to run blown singleplane EFI manifolds. But it's not, so give people props on their acomplishments.

I feel that his mod looks good. It also serves a great purpose of allowing for future changes and options for any poss. later owner and I never said otherwise. I just saw him getting cocky and it is a fact that the bodywork he showed is not all that hard. I only commented on that because he used it to make himself look like the master of metal repair. It is good work and I never disputed that but it hardly makes him a journymen at the trade. I have no problem with leting it go but I have a HUGE problem with some cocky little boy calling me derogatory names. But I guess thats why thaey are called keyboard warriors. This will be my last post on this thread as long as no further comments are made in refrence to me.
P.S. OOOH NO i better get some of my TGO buddies to back me up here!!!
I guess you are who he ment. Nice to see a man stand for himself.

I'm not familiar with the term "keyboard warriors" but I'll take your word for it.
I've had my share of bodywork over the years. I'm done with it. Infact, I've been considering buying another firebird with a decent paint job, and putting my driveline into it, rather than taking the time to sand/paint/ mine.

SLP IROC-Z, I commend your car, and how gradually it is coming along. It is a shame you don't have more time to work on it. Although I don't understand the whole heater box thing, it looks good anyway. Care to explain it to me? I just don't know what the difference is, not your reasoning as to why to do it that way. The reason I don't understand the difference is because I don't know how it looked beforehand.
As to the flame war taking place, I honestly don't think it takes a GED to type like you're intelligent. I also think SLP's work shows excellent craftsmanship hands down. The fact that he is being flamed about it is stupid and unneeded. To each his own...and at that SLP's vehicle kicks ***, and whatever he has decided to do with it shows that he has put serious thought into it. Its hypocritical and immature to say "do you understand those big words" and "go get a GED." Who does that?
Oh, and by the way, I turned 18 less than 2 months ago. Doesn't take much to seem educated, does it?

Not to be rude but I beg to differ. There would be alignment issues when replacing larger body parts. There would also be more and longer welds which produce more heat and distortion. Also the quality of replacement parts an older cars does not seem to be as good as those on ours(form my exp. with my 66 mustang me and my dad built that I totaled but that’s another story). Also the fact of more fab. work just to prep for such a Big job would make it a lot harder. Let alone the mental strain of trying to do everything right and in the correct order to get a quality finish. But these are just my thoughts and experiences. I hope you have fun with you project and it comes out with a great finished product. BTW you really should be nice. I have been working on cars since the age of 12 with my father. Some of the people on this board are not mature enough to get past things you said and share their knowledge after such comments. I am not like this and take your last post as an apology. In that light I also apologize. Have a nice day.

Keyboard warrior is someon who only acts tough behind a keyboard. Just so you know if you see the phrase again.
I also agree bodywork is a PITA and other than the metalwork I don't touch it. I'm color and shade blind. Kinda hard to feather things out and check covearge when you have an impared depth perseption. So I leave that to the pros.

It's a shame when someone has to be attacked because they don't want to do something to their own car that another member thinks they should. I think speed freak didn't mean to sound rude but it came out that way and I don't blame SLP for firing back. What Speedfreak could have done is PM him and tell him how he could go about smoothing it. Perhaps he could even volunteer his services. This is afterall a car enthusiasts club of sorts. People helping people with the same car, not disrespecting the others ride or level of craftsmanship.
