About to get new rims and tires, what else needs to be done?

I'm going to get some 17x8 rims with tires, i'm sure they will fit without rubbing but i've been told that the speedometer will read incorrectly with aftermarket wheels.. I have a 92 firebird, so what has to be done to keep the speedometer accurate??

Or is this a myth?

The diameter of the tire needs to be the same to keep it accurate. I went from 15" rims with 215/65/15s to 17" rims with 275/40/17s and they were the same diameter so the speedometer was fine......
I believe 215/65/15, 245/50/16, 245/45/17, and 275/40/17 all have the same diameter. So those sizes should be interchangeable without needing to adjust the speedo
