Finally got my "new" rims...
Alright, they aren't new...but they are new to me
I've been trying to get a set of these for a while now, finally I found some and pretty reasonable also!! Probably most of you don't like them, so don't flame me. Once I refinish them I think they will look pretty sweet. I'm thinking of polishing the outter lip and painting the caps black, and the lettering black. What do you think?

Well, I just stripped 3 out of 4 caps. The bottom left cap is discolored from the paint for some reason. I think the paint might have been different or something because when I put the stripper on it, the paint didn't react like the others. The first cap I stripped the paint pretty much instantly bubbled up and the paint came off in one sheet. It almost looked like it was wrapped in plastic. The other one was just a mess, the paint desolved and didn't come off as easily as the others. The paint was yellow underneath too, not sure what that is about. I ran out of stripper before I could do the last cap...tried it on one of my rims. Bad idea! I'm taking these to get blasted!!
Also the caps have some minor dents and dings...how would you recomend I fix those?? Use some kind of body filler, or primer?? They weren't really noticable with the white paint, but when they are black you will definatley see them.

i thought it was a bad idea to get rims sandblasted because its too harsh of a material. or is that just on some kinds of rims like aluminum ones? correct me if im wrong please. but they rims do look sweet and should look pretty nice on your bird

There's different types of blasting, like glass bead, and soda blasting too. They each have different grains, so they don't pit as much.

What did you use to strip the paint on the caps? I'm trying to get some paint out of my wheel wells and when I was at Ace Hardware asking if paint thinner would work, I was told not much could break down automotive paint without destroying what it was on (obviously the wheel wells are not metal).

To strip the paint I just used Aircraft stripper in a spraycan. The paint instantly bubbled up and pretty much came off in one huge sheet. It was wierd because it looked like it was shrinkwrapped plastic on the cap. The top of the caps are aluminum so it wont hurt the metal, however on plastic it will eat it away. Not sure what will get paint off of plastic without damaging it.
keep us updated, id really like to see these when u get them all painted up and on your car

Got a wheel painted, what do you think
Well, I finally got one of the wheels painted. I used a wire wheel on the inside and outter part of the rim to smooth it out from blasting, then primered it with "etching primer" and painted it with "Detail Silver" both from Eastwood. First time I used them, pretty good paint in my opinion. Anyway, I was debating on painting the flat edge of the rim gold to go with the black and gold look of my car. I already bought some gold paint from autozone, the correct Goldwing Metallic, for a previous project. So I painted it gold, I think it looks pretty good actually. I kept the very outer edge silver though just to break up the gold.
I also had some black paint that was susposed to be the correct color code 19, the same as my car...however it looks to be a flat black, not gloss. I painted the hubcap with this black, but you can see it looks flat. I'll have to get some gloss black and paint over it. I also need to paint the lettering, but I'll wait till I get the gloss black. Then I clearcoat both the rim and the hubcap.
Now I just have to get some emblems
Anyway, let me know what you guys think!

I've just been doing a little here and there...between work and school, I don't really have a lot of time for anything. I still have to get more paint, 3 cans of the silver and probably 3 cans of the black, probably need more primer also. I kind of rushed a little on this one, so it's not 100% how I wanted it but I'm not going to be too picky about it.

I just got some reproduction emblems made for the bowling ball caps. I always wanted gold ones, but since they only came on Recaro's finding some originals is likely next to impossible. I had some gold ones made up from the original silver ones from the Daytona caps. Not 100% exactly like the originals, but very good, and better than the Rally II emblems that dont even fit the caps properly since they are smaller. Overall I'm VERY happy with the results. I have them side by side for comparison.
