best way to clean/polish GTA rims?

A friend told me the gold portion of my GTA rims have a clearcoat on them. Is that true? If so, would it hurt to use some kind of wax to buff them? He suggested I clean the mesh with a strong solution of Simple Green and call it done, but if I can eeek a little shine off of them, I want to. Is the polished lip on the rim cleared, too?

Get stuff in a purple bottle by castrol Its a degreeser, Get a small tooth brush(for kids) not a cheap one though! get a chair and a hose clean in and out of every spoke. I did that to my wheels a few hours every day, then I stripped the clear off of them and repainted the centers a color that went better with my car, and almost exzact replica and i even used that paint to cover a burn mark on my floor

I'll try Simple Green first for cleaning. I know that Castrol is strong stuff. (since I don't plan on stripping the clear). I am thinking of using the Meguiar's NXT wax since it's supposed to go on and off without leaving a residue...
