I found and bought exactly what you're looking for. I've been meaning to post about it on here actually. It's hexagonal perforated steel (also available in aluminum). it's the same exact size as the mesh used on the back side of the early power bulge T/A hoods! I'm very excited to use it on my T/A, but it won't be done until '08.

here's a picture taken right from their site:

I can't give a direct link because of the way the website is set up, but here's how to get to it:
Go to www.mcmaster.com

They used to have a direct link for it, but now you have to
type "metal perforated sheet" into the Find box on the left

You'll see a bunch of styles shown, one being the "hexagonal hole perforated sheet"

Once you click on it, you can choose between the 22 gauge steel (which is IDENTICAL to the stock mesh on my 84 T/A), or the 20 gauge aluminum (which would look awesome polished on the right car!) Also, it states that the mesh is 79% open area... which could be useful information if you actually want to calculate your total open area.

I decided to go black with mine, so I got the steel. the sheet 36" x 40", which is likely more than enough for whatever you have in mind.

Sadly, you can get it anywhere, yeah. Like at those ***** shops, that only sell cupholders and colored light bulbs. You can buy a big 1' x 4' ish section of it for less than 20 bucks.

edit: Forgot that it blocks out "r i c e r"

You might want to see if you can find something you like from another car to make it out of. I cut up a grill from a jaguar for the back of my power bulge and it looks awesome. It was just a flat grill so it was perfect to work with.
