SS hood!

ok. i am looking into the SS hood from ASCD and i looked it up for price and i saw that it is $522.50 now. it used to be 450 but what happened, is there any GP discounts, or anything. that is alot for that hood.
and can anyone give me some good/bad things about this hood! i just cant justify $525 for a hood. does it need any smoothing or can i just paint it? thanks!

supply and demand my friend, the greater the demand the more they have to supply and the more they have to charge. The best bennefit, aside from looks, is that it is open in the front to let in fresh air.

Hey Jay, I just e-mail you
It might be worth while to call Jc Whitney in Peru/Lasalle. A kid I know bought a slightly dented one for his '96, which they don't even show in there magazine, its just that they get stuff sometimes. As for me I'm going big block. If you can't find the number let me know I"ll call for you.

Jarrad - My SS hood was a cake . It was by far the best aftermarket Ive seen out of the box . No prep work , just scuffed and painted , fit was sweet . The inlet is open and also came with the same grill the 93-97's have . The ASCD are a little more expensive but what Ive seen of other hoods your gonna save a ton of money in prep work over the others . Theres alot of pics in the link in my sig if you wanna check it out man . Also theres a ton of new ones I took last week in the 90Iroc 4 sale album .

hey derek. i have your cars pics all over my computer. i love your car!
so you would say that it is worth the $525 or not. i have to justify this to my dad, he is the one giving me the loan to get the car painted. he says he is gonna give me like 4% interest and the banks cant even come close. so..

so if i do want it, i am stuck with ASCD, and can you route Ram Air like the 4th gens do? just curious i am always looking for something. and what is the difference between carb and TPI hoods?

and i definately want one with the open front vent! and they mount to the stock supports and shocks?
thanks again guys!

Thanx man

I think its worth the money , imo . Ive seen some Harwood hoods I could of easily had $200-300 in prep work that I didnt have to spend on SS hood . All the holes for the hindges lined up perfect , and yes you re-use the stockers . You do have to shim the striker bar though . Do yourself a favor and go to a junkyard and get some worn out hood struts , there perfect for a light hood . If your stock struts are still good , your gonna bend the fiberglass hood trying to close it . The carb hood , the scoop is shorter than the TPI's . A 93-97 SS box wont work , the TPI is too friggen tall . If a miniram were used it prolly would . But , I have yet to find anything thats works better
than the Ram-Air thru the front grill .....good luck bro.

92RS - the only power increase was in the form of weight savings . Just to give you and idea , I easily put the SS hood on the car alone without any help , try that with a stocker

90SSZ28..
thanks for all the help man. i do think i will get it. i am gonna have to work hard on my dad loaning me the money! but he knows i am good for it, especially since i got a $5,000 sign on bonus for the army!!

which hood looks better? the carb or the TPI. and by shorter you mean the length from the rear to the opening in of the cowl part. or do you mean the height of the raised section!

and hey i plan on a MR when i get back from basic. so i might try that. and what did you build your ram air through the foglight vents with, i used aluminum tubing but it got all messed up when i was doing like 100+ one day. i dont know why but it turned and almost broke my d*mn radiator. i am just so happy to get my car back.
and how long does it take for ASCD to send you the hood when you order it! i need it in like two weeks at the most!
thanks and trying to get a stock hood on along is a B*TCH, i tried and scratched my fender, luckily its getting painted. thanks, and my stock shocks are almost getting bad so i guess its time for a FIBERGLASS HOOD!!

thanks for all the info!!

LOL Hehe , funny you mention the aluminum tubing . Thats what I had at first and it got all mangled , so much for the home depot mod Now I have steel reinforced rubber tubes that are 6" in diameter . Got it at a hose supply store , look for a place that deals with hydralic hoses . Yes it was a big pain in the **** to stuff the tubes in there but the 2 tenths and 2 mph was all good and it was still less than $20 . Time wise its hit or miss . I waited a month to get mine , it was shortly after they came out so maybe thats why , best bet is to call them . I cant believe theyre that much now , mine was $430

You have anymore questions you can email me man , L8

Stub - I havent driven in the rain since I got the hood , so I cant help ya there .

FYI, Thunder Racing (www.thunderracing.com) still sells the ASCD SS hood for under 500... 480 or so. That's where I got mine

Hey brad can you post a pic of your car!
and i will be ordering my hood i think next week early!
i hope it only takes a week or so, i need it so i can get my car painted. the guy said i need the new hood so it will be easier, oh well. and i am gonna check out thunderracing. hopefully they are still that inexpensive! but usually i go straight to the company for parts since they work the best with customer service!

ok i just checked out Thunderracing.com. i have never seen that site, but they still were 479.99 plus 10 for crating fee!
oh well thats better than $525
and derek, why are you selling your car? and for how much?

thanks everyone! and as soon as i get my hood on and painted i will take a million pics! and post them everywhere!
thanks for all the help. i really appreciate it!

Go for it. I just got my car painted and put on an ASCD Turbo hood. The fit definately doesn't have factory perfection...but it's decent and it looks badass.

I didnt see anyone post it, but the SS hood is NOT functional on either TPI or carbed motors. I almost bought one untill I sent an email to found out. Its just for looks.

actually greg, I just asked Rex and it's just not a functional ram air setup e.g. no air pan. It DOES have an open front inlet though. Basicly it's a fancy scoop, but you can easily make a pan to route the air directly to an open element (TBI/Carb) And I've heard that you do get some vibration at highway speeds, but if you cut a section out of the cowl area to open it up a bit it'll get rid of that.

I agree the SS hood IS functional. It may not be RAM AIR but it is open on the front to let air in. It just needs a little help to RAM it in there. Nothing Home Depot can't take care of!

Wow, I emailed the company and they said that it was not functional... I lost interest when he said it was just for looks... How exactly can you create ram air to the throttle body of a TPI? It looks like the scoop sits behind the TB.

From what I gathered, making one for a TPI would be a major pain, but I hear it can be done. Probably wouldn't be much of a power increase over the stock set-up though.

I have been reading this topic for some time now and decided to give you guys my 2 cents. I have the SS hood and I have TPI (Lingenfelter SuperRam and Throttle body) I have sat there and stared at making my good functional for some time now the hood has been on the car for about 3 or 4 months. First you can not use the stock two air filter piece with that hood ( I tried the hood wouldn't close)I had to put on a cone filter. Second when you finally do close the hood the opening on the hood is like less than an inch or two from the throttle body the bend would be so 90 degree it wouldn't be worth it. I ended using a cone filter on it untill I get some custom pieces made. throttle body car I think you can make it work with little thought, Anyone using a miniram or an LT1 it could work with some custom work. But tpi almost impossible (I did say almost)
