only things I used to polish my stuff was a palm sander, drum sanding things for my drill, cone sanding things for my drill and alot of sandpaper and polishing compound ... just time consuming is all

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
For aluminum polishing I have been using a dremel with a stainless steel brush. It works very well.

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
Yeah had I known just how long this was going to take I would have sold this thing as scrap aluminum. But it's turning out pretty nice, tomorrow I should have it 95% done then I'm going to go after the areas that still need attention and finish this sucker and sell it.

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
Just curious do you think it's a good idea to polish a stock throttle body for this system or do you think someone will use a larger throttle body on this system anyways?

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
semi finished the plenum today ( keep in mind all parts are only buffed with emery so far ) ..... anyways its coming out pretty nice for my first attempt at polishing .. will have to work on quite a few areas that I didnt do to great, the pits in the runners have to stay unfortunately but even so from 3 feet this system looks great compared to what it used to ( god it was bad and I use that term lightly ) ..... The plenum got the cloudy affect up front not really sure why it did it, but I can not get it to come out for some reason. It had this cloudiness when I started on the plenum but it was alot worse (maybe a chemical got on the plenum before I got it) anyways just took these a few minutes ago.

heres why I wanted to do the bottom of the plenum so its unpolished cast state wouldnt reflect on anything else. Yes I know behing the runners are badddd and need 911 to help.

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
Well today I broke down the whole fuel rail and removed the ugly nasty and chipping protective coating on my fuel lines. The picture taken is of nothing polished I'm just in the prepping stages right now and still have to sand everything down. I was going to do the ends of the soft lines but whats the point nobody is dumb enough to use used pressure line (well I hope not) I will ebay these soft lines LOLOL and see if there is someone J/K of course. Anyways here they are.

OK ... soooooo this one is bound to bring on the wolf's and the anti smog guys LOL ... while most are tossing these believing it will get them horsepower I've even decided to detail my EGR valve. I have to smooth the base of it down some more but it's coming along nicely too.

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
Sorry I messed up ..... the lowest I can take for this system is 900.00 this does NOT include shipping charges. I will be also polishing it a little better with white rouge beforwe it goes bye bye ...... I do have a set of 2,300 mile 350 injectors however my friend that has them is currently out of town for 2 weeks, they are lucas injectors ...... It is a very nice looking system but it will need the following & believe me when I say a stock unit can't even compare to the looks of this in any way or probably performance as well ... the lower intake is a edelbrock however I grinded off the edelbrock logo on the front runner for cleaner looks it is a edelbrock 3860 though .... the runners are first design SLP's with two completely siamesed runners per side, the other two runners I beileve are called semi siamesed.
looks like previous owner of this stuff ported things and gasket matched the intake and runners ... I bought it from a guy on here I believe his name was my86z28 or something like that.
O-rings for ALL fuel lines replaced ((( highly recommended )))
throttle body (( system is suited better for a much larger then stock TB ))
thermostat housing ((unless I find mine and polish it too ))
bolt kit
associated system sensors
I will have it finished and ready for shipping by the 1st of december
hope this thread helped you all in someway to polish your systems and make them very nice ... it's been a fun project for me and my next one will be a 85-88 stock system that I have in the garage

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
to work on a 1989 you would have to plug the map sensor port (i think 89 was a MAF car) the manifold is drilled for your style of heads as well as early style and corvette heads .... but if your car has the cold start injector this WILL NOT work on your car.
It is designed to work on 1990-1992 f-bodies and possibly 1989 since I believe 1989 didnt have the cold start injector.
It will also fit 1990-1991 corvettes and still be emmisions legal.

Since you don't have the cold start injector all you have to do is plug the plenum vaucuum port for the MAP sensor is all.

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
Here is a last picture of my fun little project ..... I will probably start updating this next month since I have a 1986 TPI system in my garage that I have decided to polish as well. The 86 unit should be much easier to do since it was nowhere as bad as this one was when I got it. .... Might actually polish stuff out on my trans am's motor too. .....
anyways here ya go ... tomorrow I will put it together and take one last picture of it out in the sun.

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
just wondering if you or anybody knew if you could do the same type of polishing on the valve covers? this post inspired me to polish my tpi setup on my 85 iroc. ive only been doing it for two days now, only done the distributor cover but its like night and day. i think doing the valve covers too would look real good. thanks again

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
yea, i had a feeling they are painted. i actually hav e two cars with a tpi setup, my 85 iroc and my 85 vette. my original plan was to polish everything on the vette because its parked and then throw that on the iroc because i drive it everyday, but now i think the plan is to just do both. i know the vettes valve covers are aluminum and they are in DESPERATE need of a cleaning. unfortunately i didnt have batteries in my camera so i couldnt take a before pic, so i just dragged up an old picture of the whole engine on the vette and then theres an after of the distributor cover. that only took one nights worth of work. not bad. side note: the vette is for sale, pm if anyone is interested.

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
The vettes valve covers are possibly magnesium "be careful" if they are and read up on polishing them if they are. If you do the vettes system go all out and do it's serpentine system and all that would look really nice.
I have a 82 corevtte that I am going to polish it's cross-fire system, 84 vette air cleaner, valve covers and it's serpentine system.
----------
OH, nice work on the plenum extension it came out pretty nice!

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
good catch, ill have to read up on that. i guess polishing all that depends on how quickly i get it sold! i also have an 82 vette, its a collectors edition with 20k miles all original so....wont be doing any polishing on that one! im looking to take it to bloomington gold this year, shooting for top flight. i used to be a huge corvette fan until i bought my iroc as a backup and well, i liked it more so it took over and now the 85 vette is my backup. ill post more pics as i get more done

Mines nothing special but it has been turned into a convertible by using 1975 convertible parts. I had planned on putting this system on my vette but it needs enough work as it is, so no TPI on it LOL.

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
Well, I got bored today and decided to polish my stock 1986 TPI system. This however is missing the fuel rail so I will have to find another one as well as and aluminum extension plate for the plenum. Overall its a pretty nice intake with very minor dings in the drovers side runner.
The great thing about this system is I also have an ECM harness for it as well and will detail that and replace all broken conectors on the harness and just detail it really nice as well. I've learned a few shortcuts along the way to speed up the process so this one should be done alot quiker.
I will try and photgraph all the progress this time so you can really see what needs to be done to a system to get it nice.
If any of you have the following parts please let me know!
complete 85-88 fuel rail
TPI thermostat housing
aluminum plenum extension
Pictures will be coming soon!
----------
I like it. The valve covers add a nice touch to it! Are you going to do the alternator and other parts to?

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
OK well, I started on the 1986 manifold since I like getting the hard stuff done first. Right now I am just in the process of grinding down cast lines, GM logo's and removing the coarse surface .... It seems to be coming along nicely though. I should have this done in a week since I am very slow.
----------
You can see right on the front of the manifold above the sensor holes where I grinded of GM logos there and gave it a quik polish and it shined right up. I am going to remove all the logo's right down to the firing order logo as well. I just prefer the cleaner looks of no logo's on the manifold is all.

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
ha hardly! ive got one of those professional 6000 rpm buffers, spent the whole summer color sanding the car and polishing the wheels...not giving up now! gonna start the plenum tomorow and finish the runners by the end of the week. doubt im going to do the intake since that would require buying new gaskets and i sure dont have the money for that. but i will be doing the whole serpentine system like the alternator bracket things like that, i think it will look real sharp when its done

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
Well, I got all the casted logo's off so far and probably about 50% of the rough surface casting knocked down ... where the intake to head bolts are geeeez that is some very bad casting in that area that will take some serious time to smooth all that out. I missed a little bit of the firing order logo bu thats only cause I couldn't find my dremel LOL.
All in all seems to be coming along pretty good this one is by far easier to do then my edelbrock was so it shouldn't take me long to finish the intake.

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
Well made some more progress on the manifold today as well as casting removal on this systems plenum as well .... heres the intake still have alot to go though but even so its starting to shape up. all I've used so far is drum sanding rolls for my drill to get this far. mostly 120 grit rolls.

I took and polished a small section of the rear runner and it immediately shined up .... by next weekend I should have the rest cklose to done. you can see your reflection in this part of the runner however the camera shot wasn't great.

Re: polishing progress on my TPI system
well, I gave this 86 intake a couple more hours of work today. I am finding in almost all the areas after I break through the coarse surface then comes a very not pitted areas more like dimples in the surface .... I am finding 80 grit gets down to a better working surface quite quikly .... Just have to be careful with sanding drums of this grit. After I did that 120grit seemed to bring the surface out quite nicely.
In some ways the edelbrock manifold I did was harder and yet at the same time easier then a factory manifold. So it's really a toss up to which one is harder. the placewment and less bad areas to sand on the factory one make it easy to do compared to an edelbrock ... However these dimples and uneven surface is pretty frustrating, the edelbrock never had this.
Heres a picture. I am working with 120grit in most areas however still have a few areas I have to grind down and blend back in but it is coming along faster then I though.
