Redoing my rims

The rims on my RS, I think they are stock, look just plain nasty they have all this crud on them that won't come off with anything and the clearcoat is peeling/cracking off. I like them how they are semi-shiny and the machining grooves are fine too. I really just want to strip off the clear coat give them a little polishing and re-coat them with something that will last. What would I use to strip the paint, polish them up a little and then re-coat them?

There's this stuff called Aircraft stripper that works really well for stripping the clearcoat. You can get it at an auto parts store. Don't use the stuff in a spray can, get the stuff in the metal jug. If you leave the machined grooves there then they won't shine up very much at all. As far as how to protect them, I wish I knew. I was thinking of getting mine clear powdercoated, but the local powdercoating shop said the clear had a tendency to turn a nasty yellow color.
