Sunset Orange Metallic
I have been trying to select a color for my camaro for quite a while and I think I am leaning towards SOM but I have a few questions.
No matter how many times I see this color on cars it seems to always look different.
I was curious if there are different varitations of this color on 4th gens.
I tend to like the color more when it is more red/maroon than copper looking.
Thanks for any help!

1986z28,
I don't know if this will help but there are people that paint their cars that burnt orange metallic color which sometimes looks a little more reddish. The SOM cars that I have seen actually look more like the copper tone you are talking about. Hope this helps. I also want to paint my car either one of these colors.
Check with F1LS1 from this forum. He has an amazing car and I believe is that same copper tone you speak of. I personally seen it at the F-Body meeting at Rickey's and Ronnies. Man that car is amazing. I like the stock car look in that color.

I think the sunlight has a lot to do with how SOM looks. GMHTP did a photshoot a while back on a 4th gen with SOM paint and it looked different all the pics in the mag. its just one of those colors that really looks killer only in bright sunlight. Check out the new Gm color called fusion orange or something. I think the new vettes have it.
Re: Sunset Orange Metallic
Sunset orange mettalic does have variations as do most oem colors now a days depending on which factory its was built/if it was repainted/and what paint company they used.....when you see the same car appear to be a different color at different times and its not a chrome illusion color. its calles metamorism..this is when a color appears different under different lighting....SOM being a high flop color uses many low toners causing it to be transparent which could increase the affect of metamorism

Took this picture nearly 3 years ago. Shows off the brightness of the SOM on my car. The color is actually 2001 Plymouth Prowler Orange.

Re: Sunset Orange Metallic
Wouldnt application of clear change the effect it has also? Maybe one guy had 2-3 coats and the other 5-6 coats....making it seem that much different.
Also depends on how the paint is shot, paint reacts to gravity, therefore if the car is painted sitting, it comes out like TYPE A, but if the fenders and hood and such are removed and painted (not how they are on the car) gravity will pull the color different once put back on the car, making mis-matched colors and different shades and making it TYPE B, so there is many variations to how paint will come out, all depending on how its applied and taken care of.
Im no bodyman but this is what the guys from the show that sells cars on BARRET JACKSON AUCTION said...when his painter decided to paint the hood standing up and the fenders laying flat....came out 3-4 different blues...
EDIT: it was funny to me because the owner knew about how to paint and his painter didnt...HMM? Maybe he should be the one painting instead of paying a moron to screw it up...

It also depends on what kind of basecoat they use, a gold metallic basecoat makes the SOM pop in the sunlight, just like a silver base. A white or red base doesn't do justice for SOM.
When you paint a car a metallic or custom color you need to do it al at the same time, even when yu have parts off the car. As for fiberglass & uretheyne peices you gotta add other things so the paint won't crack & chip.
I spary with a gravity fed gun instead of the older guns, it also depends on how long you been painting like techniques, shortcuts & so on.

Re: Sunset Orange Metallic
the way the panels are sitting shouldnt affect how the color comes out...if he painted the hood standing up and the fenders down and they ended up a mismatch then its a coverage issue...ive painted all types of colors on and off vehicles, at different times...even different tempeatures and ive found as long as i put the same number of coats on every panel they always match...i typically do an extra coat to assure coverage.....plastic pieces to tend to be on the darker side but thats typically because of being painted at a different factory using different paint manufacturer etc as far as adding clear to change a color...the more coats of clear the more chromatic the color...otherwise adding depth...which can lighten or darken depending on the pearls/flake
Re: Sunset Orange Metallic
My car is Medium Orange Metallic which came factory in 88. Still original paint. Little darker shade then SOM

I had to throw in the wheelie pic
The last pic really shows off the color, love it

Re: Sunset Orange Metallic
Ha you can do a search and find all of my setups, i dont want to hijack this thread on my setup
But in quick summary in that pic the car had a carb'd 383 making 550hp at the crank, yanking the stock tires and rims which weigh 60lbs a piece
Now has a built 6L ls1, should put that old 383 to shame..
Great pix guys, love this color
