Aftermarket Steering wheels (factory theme)

Im a big fan of "factory" appearing cars that are "more than meets the eye", (excuse the quote).

However, as nice as they look, im sure many people swap them out for the same reasons.

-Too big
-Not comfortable enough
-Not quite in the right position.

These are the problems im running into with my car. (1987 firebird formula). I really love the way the leather steering wheel looks but i hate using it. Its too "flat". The ring that you grab onto should be closer to the driver, (telescopic shape) and smaller in diameter. The two side posts should be lower down, because they block the gauges. And finally, the thumb rest locations are just awkward.

Now i know theres a wide range of steering wheels available, but i dont want one with chrome, as there is nothing else chrome on the interior of these cars, and i dont want something that clearly looks aftermarket.

Does anyone sell a wheel with all the "factory features", and looks factory with leather, and number of spokes, but a bit more "ergonomic"???

I couldn't agree more. I essentially built my car to be (what we called in the ancient days) a "sleeper." Check my Car Details for an interior pic.

Check out the "Waterfall" steering from Flaming River. I know the spokes I chromed, but painted black, it would look absolutely badass. It looks a lot like the original Z (85-90) steerings but a little bit more modern.

Re: Aftermarket Steering wheels (factory theme)

Actually jamesC, i have seen the interior of your car, its actually what sparked my quest for a new steering wheel. Definately my kind of taste, where its ergonomic, but not so overdone that its an eyesore.

In any case, it still looks after market, but is a nice steering wheel.
Same thing for the waterfall one. I actually REALLY REALLY like it, im just concerned that it would be a lil too high class for the firebird interior. And secondly, i really like it, but im not sure how it would feel. Im gonna go hunting for one, see if i can actually handle it, and let you guys know what i find.

Re: Aftermarket Steering wheels (factory theme)

I went with this MOMO I found on ebay.. while its obviously aftermarket it does retain the stock three spoke design and its not overly flashy or polished.. I think it blends nicely.

that looks good.

To bad the Stock Camaro wheel center cap will not fit that momo wheel. (hmmm or maybe you could make it work... )

Re: Aftermarket Steering wheels (factory theme)

I cant decide whether the custom grips (like on the MOMO) are of my taste or not. In anycase, i found this on Grant's site, looks similar to the waterfall wheel, but a third of the price.

Re: Aftermarket Steering wheels (factory theme)

Stock horn wheels have been made to work with Momo Millenium wheels. That's my next stearing wheel purchase.
