Cleaning "Honeycomb" RS Rims

Afternoon, folks.
First post here...been browsing the forum for a month or so now, since I first considered buying a Camaro. I have since bought a 1991 RS Convertible, and have run into a couple things I'd like to figure out. This is one of them.

I don't know the "official" term for them, but I have what I've started calling Homeycomb rims on my RS. I understand they're stock Chevy rims. Cleaning them is proving to be a bit of a challenge. I can get my finger and a shop towel into the larger holes, but the smaller holes remain dirty. A hose takes some of the crud off, but not enough for my tastes. I bought some simoniz rim cleaner (spray on, hose off...or so they say), but didn't get a chance to use it yet. Figured it was worth the $10 to experiment.

Has anyone used anything like that before? Success stories? Warnings? It sounds like a good product, and I know it's a good brand, but it does sound a bit too simple.

Thanks for the opinions,
AR

"Honeycomb" rims on an RS? Post pics. I don't know what you're talking about.

Sounds like you might have GTA crosslace rims? They have progressively smaller holes toward the center of the rim.

Either way, cleaning rims with tight spots requires a stiff toothbrush.

I found this picture, through google, of a picture posted on this forum a while back. Here is the link:

Re: Cleaning "Honeycomb" RS Rims

Tom,
I realize that the rims I posted aren't chevy rims...those aren't 'my' rims, per se....they LOOK like my rims though, except mine have a blank center cap, and are painted white instead of gold. I don't have any pictures of my car online yet, as my main computer is down for the count right now.

Thanks for the opinions so far though, guys...I'll give the bottle brush idea a shot. While we're at it, I would like to identify era and original use of my rims, be they chevy or otherwise.

Thanks!

Bottle brush! Great idea! I have a couple old ones laying around the house!

Well, if your rims look like that, then they are base Firebird crosslace wheels or a close replica. Not original on a Camaro. Camaro had nothing that looks even close to those.

I bet they look pretty good, though. Firebird wheels always work on a Camaro, but Camaro wheels always look like crap on a Firebird.

Hah! Glad to know I got the better end of the deal then.
Yeah, they do look pretty sharp. A few of my friends don't like them too much (too 'plastic' looking), but I think they suit the older car rather nicely.

Glad I now know a bit of the history of the car, even if it wasn't what I thought it was!

Thanks!

Re: Cleaning "Honeycomb" RS Rims

Guys I am a pround owner of a 1988 GTA and have un into the same problem. I also like most people have a lazy gene and don't like to spend over and hour on my rims. So here is my experience...

1. Mother's powerball mini: JUNK! That thing falls apart faster than chip foose' acting, and doesn't come close to getting into the small holes.

The solution I havev, works with any standard drill... ah quick and easy and doesn't strip paint.
Its a bore bleaning cotton swab for a shotgun!!!
Its really the perfect size and big enough where it will do all the openings with enough handling skill!!!

Best of all they only run around a dollar or two!!!

There, I let the cat outta the bag! I bet everyone goes and gets them now lol

Re: Cleaning "Honeycomb" RS Rims

Just a quick update...
The Simoniz rim cleaner really does work. Like most things in life, waiting works wonders. The first application was on and off per the directions, and did nearly nothing. I sprayed a second application, let it stand for somewhere near ten minutes, hosed it off, and most of the crud came off. Today, I washed and polished the car in preperation for a show tomorrow, and when the time came to do rims, I had a flashback to this thread.

A quick sprint into the house and under the sink found me two bottle brushes that hadn't seen a bottle in as long as I could remember. I quickly informed my grandfather that his bottle brushes has been procured for my rims. The small one perfectly fills the smallest holes. The large brush fits the outter-most rows of holes. However, neither work all that well for the middle-sized holes. So I might need to buy a third. However, I sprayed the rims, ran the brush through, and hosed them off, and they're cleaner then they were when I bought the car!

Just a heads up, for anyone who may be in the same situation I've been in. Bottle brushes and a rim cleaner really DO work!
