Just painted but still dull

I had the back half of my 1988 Camaro painted last year, it looks like it needs to be wet sanded with a finer grit of paper? The front half looks like new (jet black) the back looks dull even with wax. Also the wax lasts about a week before the water does not run off anymore, the water looks like it sticks??? What grit paper should I use? Will I sand through the clear coat? I know to use a block so that finger marks are not made. Any other ideas?

What about the paint recall from GM, Could I get my whole car repainted right?

Thanks!

This place called Coach Works, I talked to another body man, he said that it could be from someone not letting the clear coat dry. He said it take 3-4 month for one to dry. The body shop would not fix it because they say I didn't notice it when I picked it up, plus that said that I may have caused the dullness??? I just drive the thing! Will buffing help??

Maybe it's time to whip out your tool.

Your buffer, I mean.

Sounds like your bodyshop is passing the buck because of a possible mistake they made. Additionally they should have included color sand and buff in their job unless you specifically told them not to (saving money).

Providing you have a good clear coat you can wetsand til' smooth with 1200. Using a 9" buffer, lambs wool pad, 3M Rubbing compound, buff the car after sanding at 3000 RPM. Careful not to burn through on edges and stay away from metal and rubber trim.

Then wash, dry, and buff with a foam pad and 3M Machine Glaze at 1800 RPM. Wash, dry, and wax.

3 months is bogus. Todays high solids are ready to buff the same day, thin wax on the same day, carnabu wax within 30 days.

They could have improperly mixed paints, shot at too low a pressure or too great a distance. Some old timers shoot a layer of thinner to flow out paint which works well for about a month then the paint dulls from the procedure.
