Body molding replacement....

I wanted to clean up the appearence of my '91 so I ripped the side moldings off last week. I've spent a couple days trying to clean the doors and fenders of the 18 years worth of stains and dirt that was underneath. I tried using goo gone and siimple green to clean them up, but that didn't get the black stains off. My body guy recomended some rubbing compound today as a last resort and it still didn't clean it up the way I want it. That unfortunately means I have to put the molding back on. I just wondered if I can reuse what I pulled off or if I have to buy new ones?? If I have to buy new ones where should I look?? If I reuse the old ones what kind of glue-tape should I use???

Thanks!

Re: Body molding replacement....

you can reuse your old molding, you'll need to remove as much as the old double side tape as you can off the back side of the moldings and body. for the tape residue thats still left on the body use paint prep and a rag that isn't to abrasive or you can use soap, water and your thumb and rub it off, for the molding same thing if your careful you can use a wire wheel on a air tool on the back side of the molding too.... use 3m tape it comes in a variety of thickness and widths so you'll have to determine what you want.
make sure you clean both the molding and body with a paint prep stick the double sides tape on the moldings first don't pill off the tape for the body yet. pill one of the ends of the tape stick one end of the molding on first (pill, line up, stick) and go slow.... you also want to start from one end of the 3 peaces you have per side....

Re: Body molding replacement....

Thank you, this is exactly what I wanted to know. I do have a slight problem with reusing the molding though. One of the little stripes has a big chip in it and I don't want to put it back on. Guess I'm gonna have to start looking around for another one. If anyone knows where I can find some give me a heads up. Thanks.
