Rust
Hey, I've got a question. I've found a deal on a nice 85 Firebird, but It's got some rust. I'm not sure if it's just surface or if its rot, but I'm preparing for the worst. My question is, if anyone has had to go trhough it before, does anyone have an idea of how much it'd cost to get it removed? I want to get it repainted anyway, but painting over the rot wouldnt be a good idea.
Also, if its just some surface rust, It wouldnt be too hard to sand it down myself would it? Is there anything special I should do?
Thanks for any help you can give me
Sorry, I forgot pictures. This is all the rust I could spot on it, but until I go look at it in person, I cant be 100%. This guy seems honest though, so I'm pretty sure this is it.

Re: Rust
The hood has surface rust, but the rear quarter is rotted through and will need some metal replaced. The car looks to be from a snowy climate so the odds are there is rot in the floorboards and the other usual places. Body work is cheap if you can do it yourself, but very expensive to have someone else do.

Re: Rust
Thanks for replying. I'll have to ask the guy about that, he said it was all just surface rust and could be sanded down. I'm sure theres rust on the undercarraige, I'll have to judge that myself though when I go because I dont want to just take his word.
It is cheap to do yourself though? I'm on a budget, but I've got friends who know alot about the subject and my friends grandfather has a decent set-up of tools, so I'll have to find out more about it just to make sure I cn do it myself.

Re: Rust
take a screw drive and see if you can punch through the rust...if not then it is surface.
might want to do it when nobody is looking...lol
