crappy window tint removal help please !!

so i recently bought a 1989 IROC with 30,000 original miles, it has been parked since 91 in a barn and the tint on the decklid is all bubbled and ruined, i would like to know if there is an easier way to get it off then the black trash bags and ammonia in the sun

please i dont want replies that say "buy a new decklid" or "use a razorblade"

It should peel off easily, but it's gonna leave a lot of glue residue behind. It helps if you heat it with a steamer or heat gun while pulling it off. If your back window doesn't have rear defrost, you can then scrape off all the excess glue left behind with a a razor or large scraper. If it does have rear defrost, then you can only scrub it off with steel wool. Either way, it's a lot of work, just because the glass is so large. It might be worth it to take it somewhere and have it done. Unfortunately there isn't really a shortcut trick for removing old tint, plain old elbow grease is the only way.

Go to any automotive store and buy the stuff called TINT OFF. Pull all of the tint off and then clean the window with this stuff. It sprays on, let it sit alittle bit(not too long or the glue will reapply itself basically) and rub it off with a clean towel. You will ahve to go over the window a couple of times to make sure you have it all. Then follw with your favorite window cleaner. I re tinted with some high quality stuff and havent had any problems.

Re: crappy window tint removal help please !!

I just did the same job last weekend....Not fun. The film pulled off pretty easily(took maybe an hour) I used a razor blade to help peel in some spots. The glue is the tough part. I ended up using alot of paper towels and laquer thinner.
good luck!

The tints easy, its the glue that really bites. Last on I did, just used lots of windex with ammonia and a plastic scraper so it wouldn't damage the defroster grid. Took some time but wasn' too bad. Good luck with it.

Re: crappy window tint removal help please !!

I know you said you didn't want to hear it but razor blade, soapy water or windex and a little effort fixed mine. most of the tint came of in big pieces though so I just had to start it pealing. A good fresh blade and the soapy water will take off any of the glue that stays.
