wheels help

I have a 88 GTA with the gold honeycomb wheel and they look dingy the clear coat on them looks bad, I tried to remove the clear coat with steel wool and some other stuff, then used some fine steel wool to buff them up along with some polish they dont look bad but could look better anyone ever try this or have any suggestions, or should i spray them with some clear coat
