Refinishing 20 slot wheels??

Just wondering if anyone has done this and how they went about it?

1) Should they be sand blasted or just sanded?

2) Should they be painted with wheel paint or just sanded and cleared?

3) Does the entire wheel need to be refinished or just the visible face?

4) how do you deal with the part of the rim that is finished with black.....what type of paint would you use to recover this area?

BTW...new to 3rd gens (just purchased an '86 bird) love the site and all the info thats offered here. Thanks in advance for any responses as Im sure Ill be asking alot more questions here on the forum.

They've been in storage for over a year, but I'm fixing to put them on my 89.

Thanks for the link. Just wondering how you did the stripping process (chemical/sandblast?). I was thinking about sandblasting and then going with your sanding method.

Do you suggest to leave them natural or repaint with wheel paint. Clear coat or not? Thanks again for your help.

Re: Refinishing 20 slot wheels??

I bought an extra set of GTA rims 6 years ago and HAD TO refinish them. I used a paint stripper spary, 2 black, 1 gold, and 1 blue. I sparyed them down 4-5 times to remove ALL colour and clear coats. Then used gold colour engine block paint for the center (4 light coats). Then wet sanded the out outer ring starting from the inside to the outer egde. And then 3 coats of clear rim enamel... still looks good, using them eversince, org rims are put away in boxes.

I used chemical stripper. It takes the clear coat off of the face easily, but the painted part takes some scrubbing with a Home Cheapo brass bristle brush to get off.
