Rust On Trunk Lip underneith Spoiler

I'm about to replace the factory foam spoiler with a fiberglass one that i had painted. I noticed however there is some paint bubbling with rust in a small area that i need to take care of before I put the new spoiler on. I'm thinking of just using an aerosol touch up can, since the area can't be really seen since its under the spoiler.

I just need this one spot taken care of but need some tips on how to go about it, some questions I have are:

What size grit sandpaper to use to remove the paint in that area?
Should I do it by hand?
What is the best aerosol paint can to use to just touch up this area?
How many coats?
Do I need to apply a clear coat after painting?
What type of pads should I use to buff afterwords?
What buffing compound do you recommend?

So far I have bought an Eastwoods Rust Converter Aerosol can.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Rust On Trunk Lip underneith Spoiler

You and i are in the same boat man. I have some surface rust on the right side near the hole where the screw goes in and some light to medium bubbling rust on the left side hole. I was gonna do the same thing i did with my T-top rust. First hit it with a rotary sander to take off the bubbling and smooth it out. Then put some rust remover jelly on it, and finally sand by hand and apply some rust inhibitor. Since the spoiler is going to totally cover the part of the trunk im working on i dont really care what it looks like. Hope this helps, i dont know what to tell you for products though, i usually just use whatever lying around my house being as broke as i am.

If its just surface rust and not through the metal use a grinder with 80 grit sand paper and prime the metal with etching primer, then top coat with paint. If the rust is gone through the metal then, and I know you dont want to hear this, you need to cut it out and replace. Fortuneitly the lids ae not hard to find. I found one on ebay in mint condition for $75

I haven't had a chance yet to do this, but now that I have the time, I need to get the right tools for this and other small rust fixing jobs (front corner fender, the a post by the window, etc), I'd like to get some cheap air tools, so If I can get some guidance on which ones to buy for these small jobs, will save me a ton of money on taking it to the auto shop.

Here's what I have so far

-Torn between a 5" High Speed Air Sander with Jacobs® Chuck and a 6" dual action air sander.....which one is better option?
-Can of GraySelf Etch Primer Aerosol 16 oz from eastwood
-Eastwood Rust Dissolver Quart
-Pack of circular 80 grit sandpaper
I know I need a bunch of different grits, which ones should i get, anywhere I can get a cheap (combo pack) of various grits.
Also, should I get rolls of rectuangular sand paper and use with a 6" flexibility palm sander?

Finally the type of paint sprayer I should get for these small jobs...I was looking at:
High Volume Low Pressure Gravity Feed Spray Gun
Item # 66222 Manufacturer: Central Pneumatic Professional from harbor Freight for $40. It says it's for water based finishes...is that the right one? If not, which should I get?

Re: Rust On Trunk Lip underneith Spoiler

Ok, finally started this...I didn't get any air tools, but got a bunch of sandpaper, bondo, and a regular orbital grinder, so when I took off the spoiler, it was much worse than a thought, the rust really ate through a lot. But there is still what appears to be a decent amount of metal to work with, so I grided off what i could, and applied the Rustoleum rust reformer (only thing I had laying around). Below are pictures of what I did.

As you can see there are some spots that its just pitted too deep for me to take it with the sander all the way. I did use a coarse wire brush to my drill gun to dig in and get all the visible rust i could out. THen I applied the rust reformer all over it, i saw it bubbling, so I guess that means it working!

Next I'll let it sit, then I'll sand it out again, then bondo on one side, because of the amount of rusty metal it ground away, just to make a smooth surface, then sanding, priming and painting.

Just a question I have, should I sand the whole trunk? Or is what I have done sufficient to just apply the bondo, sand it down so it's smooth and then paint over it?

Also, the new fiberglass spoiler I have doesn't have the attachments for the window clips like the old one. The old ones are rusted into the old spoiler, can I get these somewhere, or how else would I secure it?
