Thinking about going 4th gen, any suggestions?

I figure with all the money it's going to take to make my RS the way I want it I might as well go ahead and get a 4th gen and have the things I want. I haven't really decided if I want a Z28 or a TA (Ram Air) or what color I want yet. I like blue Camaros. Black is always nice, but hard to keep looking good, silver or pewter would be nice, I don't want red. Any suggestions on car or color? Pics?

I'm kinda in the same situation, except I'm looking for an IROC or a 91/92 Z28. Having an RS is frustrating. And I took a ride in a co-workers 95 Z28 with new exhaust and many bolt ons.. damn was I impressed. Very fast and very loud. Anyway, back to your question. If I had the cash for a fourth gen, I would get either a new TA with the ram air, black or pewter, or I would get a 2001 Camaro SS, black. Sure, black is a pain to keep clean, but when its clean, they are SWEET. I found a 90 IROC and I'm considering buying it, but its red. I really wish it were black, but they are kinda rare so I'll probably take it. So I hope this helps, keep us updated.

Try doing something simple like changing the spark plugs...... then after you do that (better take a weeks vacation from work i might add) see if you still want it

Dont doooooooooo iiiiittttttttttttt, I just got one since I got a good deal on it, it needed a clutch, a 94 Z28 6 speed 69k for $5500, put it this way, it is more trouble to change the plugs and wires than to do the clutch and im not kidding, get some goodies on your RS, specially if it has a V8 already, first up the trans, then go and slip a 350 longblock under the intake, then hit the fuel/air side, definetly a lot easier, trust me i'll be selling this thing in a few months when i pay it off and use the money on my 86.

I know I can get a better buy on a LT1 car but the LS1 cars are faster and they look better. I like the look of the 98 and up RamAir hood on the TAs and the headlights and hood of the 98 and up Camaros. I'll probably be buying a used car to save a few thousand. I really like the dark blue Camaros but I like every color about the same so it's really hard to decide. Help me!

your lookin for trouble.... aintcha...
HUH?

dood, here's my spiel,
keep the RS, take whatever youd spend over, drop it onyour car, think about it, your spending all that, just to get to stock..
now add that to yours, hehehehehe..

Make a plan, see what you can do that will pave the road...
for me,
was catback, Cat, then T-56, then vette engine/SLP headers..
Tell, what do you think?

Gluck neways...

I've had a 3.4, LT1 and now LS1 4th gen Birds. I guess thats just what I like :P They have their good points and bad points like any vehicle. Good luck finding a low mileage LT1... if you want to save some $, 96-97 low mileage (45,000 or less) LT1 is the way to go. With the T56, you can have over 300 HP to the ground with cold air induction and full exhaust.

LS1s are fast out of the box tho, but you'll obviously pay more. 98 99 Z28s are as low as 15000 now for a car with decent mileage. Seems like the Firebird V8's are always more pricey, but they all lose their resale value so if you get a brand new hard-loaded WS.6, hope to keep it for a while or lose about $10,000.

I personally like the Medium Blue Metallic on the Trans Am (99 only color, pretty rare, and unique) As far as 01-02's, Sunset Orange Metallic is where its at. BSilver would be my 2nd choice, Pewter a close 3rd, Maple Red Metallic 4th. After that Millenium Yellow, but custom colors (have to order the car, running out of time) are $1000 more and lots of dealers will tell you you cannot do this... but youre supposed to be able to ORDER any GM paint color on these cars for the right price...

I did silver emblems, including the taillight filler panel bird. I truly cannot stand to have the exact car as someone else I'd do all silver trim on a metallic paint car, including ram air decals, etc. Even silver on red looks great (my LT1 Formula is like that) Black trim is just too dull to me.

Good luck and happy hunting. Dont be a fool and jump on the first good car.

Man, keep the 3rd gen!!! They are so much better looking. Spend a few grand on your car and it will out perform the fourth's.
Plus there does not seem to be many clean looking 3rdgens around. Perserve it!!!

I really like my car. It's the cleanest thirdgen in town, black too. I would hate to give it up but I've been thinking about selling it still. The 4th gen cars have more to start with and then you can build up from there. But the thirdgen cars are what I've grown up with and they are all I know. The only 2 cars I've ever owned have been thirdgens. If I sell the Camaro, you must remember that I still have a nice 88 GTA sitting in my driveway too. It's not like I would be totally ditching the thirdgen all together. I would just then have a third and forth gen. The GTA is being slowly but surely restored to like new. I'm getting the seats recovered and everything else that need to be done to the interior I'm getting done. Then I'll be rebuilding the L98 and then paint. So I'll still have a really nice thirdgen, but I'll only have 1 thirdgen instead of 2. But who needs 2 thirdgens when you can have 1 third and 1 forth? And if a 5th gen ever comes out the owners of the 4th gen cars will be saying the same thing about keeping them instead of buying a 5th gen. So you see, I've thought this thing through for a while and I've come to a decision. I want a 4th gen car. But which one? I love that color of that Bird up top (that blue color) I've never seen that before. I'll be keeping an eye out for one like that. I'm not going to jump on the first one I see cause a week after I get it I'll see on eI like better. Well, keep the suggestions coming and I'll let you all know how it turns out. Thanx

Ok, today I was walking throught the mall parking lot and this really nice looking/sounding Z28 pulled up. It was either black or a really dark blue, not sure, it was kinda dirty. I threw myself in front of the moving car so the guy would stop and I asked him how much he wanted for it. He asked me how much I was willing to spend. I told him I didn't know until I drove the car and checked it out and everything. I went on to ask him what all he had done to the car. He told me cold air induction, underdrive pullies, K&N filters, and I forget what else he said except for TWIN TURBOS! A twin turbo LT1, that must be nice. Well, I got his number and all and told him I would give him a call in a day or two. Tomorrow I'm going to talk to my insurance company and to the bank and see what they have to say, then I'm callinng him so I can drive it and see how it is. The only thing I dont like abuot it is that it's a 6 speed. I've never driven anything with a manual transmission. I guess I will in a day or two!

If I were you I would go for either a black WS6 TA w/t-tops or a red WS6 TA w/t-tops. I would definitely go with the LS1 6 speed. The '98-'01 TA's look so damn sweet. I personally want a black on black leather with chrome Torque Thruster II rims....or the ZR1 vette rims. It would definitely need to be a ram air...then I would start modding from there. Since I am only 16...that is my dream car for now. But I know that in a year I will not be able to afford an LS1...so I am going to look for a '93-'97 LT1 TA w/ram air. Preferably black or red and definitely 6-speed with t-tops. I do like the '94 anniversary models..an I saw one for sale locally. But I think I will end up buying a black on black '95-'97 LT1 for my next car...and I will eventually work my way up to an LS1. For now I will stick with my automatic 350 until I learn how to drive stick.

Good luck with your 4th gen u lucky b@$stard. Dont forget to post pics of it when you get it.

James

I'm already planning to get a 94 or 95 TA in the spring. I've gotten offers of $5000 for my car, I'm just waiting for spring to post it for $6000 firm, and wait.

I would go with the 4th gen,OBD 2-3.Because in my opion within the next 5 years the goverment will make it so anything less wont cut it.They will make it impossible to get an inspection done on anything but a car with these new computer systems.just my opion.I wont give up my roc until they make me,but it is coming sooner then most think.

The fourth gens are really nice cars and there are a LOT of upgrades for the LT1s. Like everyone said though they are a P-I-T-A to work on. A buddy of mine has '99 SS and it's NICE, but he told me what he went through jus to change some easy stuff and it sounded like a major headache. I would get a '01 SS in a heartbeat(no pun intended), if I had the cash. If you already have an third gen I would suggest just fixing it up, cause you can build a kick @ss third gen for what you would pay for a fourth gen. Jus my two cents worth.

Grace, my thirdgen 305 Camaro get's me amazing things when you're around. Remember the 3 county long bl-cough-cough-b yesterday?
I know that it would cost alot to buy a NEW Camaro, but I'm looking for a 98 or so that I can get for 15 or $16000, then after I sell my RS to Grace (CamaroChick) for $7000, I'll be left with a really nive car for just a few grand and I can then woek from there. Maybe even make a call to Vortech, who knows? I figured it all up on paper and it will cost me over $20000 to make my RS JUST the way I want it. I figure if I just get a 98 SS I'll be doing myself a favor in the long run. And since me and Grace are getting married the RS will still be mine one day and I can build it up the way I want it years down the road. Cool?

I'm debating this in my head too. For $1000 I could build a 300 hp 350 TPI. But for a little more I can have dual air bags, antilock brakes, and a rust-resistant body. *** I love 4thgens.

Heres what i say,
spend $3500 on the body (ram air hood, spoiler, wheels, etc)
$3500 on engine (ported plenum, ported SLP runners, ported manifold, ZZ4 block or 383)
REPLACE EVERY SENSOR AND RELAY so it runs like a ****!
1000 on exhaust (slp headers, straight pipe for cat, and hooker exhaust)
and 1000 for interior complete fourthgen Z interior
and $1500 for a T-56 6 speed swap
For around $10,000 you could have the BADDEST thirdgen and they look so much better than a fourthgen http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewP...p=52680901&f=0 Show me a better fourthgen..... and that car can be improved on to.
