Finalyy getting ready for paint, got some questions
So as tax returns get closer to coming back to me, a friend and I are going to be repainting my Trans Am. Hes done lots of work for many people I know around town and does a very good job. He quoted me $800 to sand, primer and paint my car. Im choosing to go from white to black, so alot of extra work involved. He has no problem redoing the door jambs and under the hood but he says the huge stock rubber spoiler has to come off in order to paint the hatch lid correctly. I told him once that spoiler comes off, it wont go back on as it is rotted inside, plus I dont have any idea how much rust will be under it.
So my question is, do you HAVE to remove it in order to paint between it and the trunk lid or will it just come out looking like crap? We are planning on doing 4 layers of base and 4 layers of clear with about a week of sanding and prep work. Ill post pics of the progress and I cant wait to see what the car will look like in black. Im going with the black and gold theme, gold rims and all gold decals.

I would take it off, it would be extremely hard to paint it right with it on, save up for the hawks spoiler.

i would say save up for the hawks spoiler or maybe do a 4th gen setup.

Taking it off is the only way to get a good clean edge. It is possible to close the fan on the gun to paint underneith it, but the way its sprayed will not lay down an even coat.
4 coats and 4 coats is not neccesary. 3 coats of base and 2 coats of clear is all that is needed. And unless the car is getting a bunch of body work there is no reason to prime the whole car. If the base on the car is clean when prepped, that will be a fine starting point. No need to add more coats.

I guess im keeping the car white because of exspenses and I found the paint code to the new white the put on the 2010 Camaros which Im a fan of. Im hoping I can start on the bodywork soon, BUT I may be leaving the state of MI and moving south to FL. Im craving warmer weather.
