Fog Light Question/Comment...

Ok, the question is this: Why have I went thru 4 foglights/lenses in less than 2 months? My foglights seem to be the perfect target for a well placed rock shot off the tire of a passing by vehicle, what is up with that?!?

I was thinking of maybe putting a screen over the light, to kind of absorb the force of a rock or something, but I am not sure exactly how I would do it, because too thick would make the foglight not as bright, and not thick enough would make it pointless and silly!

Also, does anyone else have this problem? Im thinking Its probably a little bit of bad luck, or a very skilled driver, following me around, shooting rocks at my fog lights.

Damn, I feel sorry for you man. I just bought bascially a new whole front end when I had my car painted. The 75$ fog light better stay in it's perfect shape for along time. I'd hate to have to buy them over and over. I don't think there is much you can do to protect it. I think it's just bad luck, or maybe where you live.

Unless you are trying to keep the car "all original" by going with those $75 dollar fog lights from the dealer, do what I did....I bough ones that are 99% identical to the ones that came from the factory...but i got them at wal-mart for 16.95. They are made by BLAZER, and the lens is crystalized with tint, so that when the light shines, it gives off this extremely yellow shine-like lemon yellow. And it looks 100% stock from the outside. If the lens cracks, this way, its not as expensive as those from the dealer.

try putting a small piece (the size of the lens) of plexiglass or lexan in front of the lens. That way you'll still get the air flow you need, and protect your fogs.

$75 bucks a light? I switched to high intensity bulbs and haven't looked back. Small, nice, beautiful light! And $45 (can.) for the swap. I think the previous owner of my car were struck by the rock-shooting, good driver, but what killed them was the paint guy not masking them off!

Yeah, what I meant was the lens and the bulb crack/shatter/die whatever. LOL, its not spendy $5 for the 100W bulb from Wal-Mart, and $5 bucks for the replacement Blazer lens, it just gets reeeeeeaaaaallllllyyyyy old plunking down 10 bucks everytime a rock hits my fogs!

The plexiglass/lexan idea is good, I think Im gonna try that!

Your difficulties sound like incredible bad luck to me. I've had the same pair in for a number of years--and I drive regularly.

There is a thick self-adhesive clear film available that is used to protect composite headlight lenses. I'm not sure it would work for your application, but it's worth looking into. The only place I've seen it is at Griots Garage. Do a search on the site using "headlight" as the keyword. It is expensive there, but everything they sell seems to be marked up considerably. Maybe you can find the stuff cheaper somewhere else.
