anyone who has polished anything before...
Need some help. I was expermenting between different compounds (Emory, Tripolio, and White Rouge)...
First I put the emory on a buffing pad. As I buffed the sanded metal is came out okay. The buffing wheel turned black. Emory is black, good deal.
Net I wiped off the metal, used a seperate buffing pad with the tripolio (red rouge) started to do alright and almost instantly turned black. As if the emory was now on it. Did shine it up slightly, but not what was expected. My thoughts are the emory has now joined in on the pad with it.
Last pad, I put some white rouge on it. Begin buffing. It does alright for a few seconds, and instantly turns black. Prior to this, I used soapy water and windex to clean the metal in an attempt to get the emory off.
Question is:
Do all these compounds turn black almost right after using them?
OR
Did I not clean the metal good enough? If not, how should I go about cleaning to to be sure the compound is good.
Thanks!

The compounds turn black (even rubbing compound will turm black on aluminum/magnesium/metal) because they are removing the actual material(much like color sanding turns the water/paper the color of the paint). All metal polishes will turn blackish,, buffing them out with a clean cloth is the key to getting the shine (in my experience). For a final polish, i've always used Eagle One polish w/jewelers rouge. Mothers mag/alum polish makes a nice follow-up. I'm sure others have a better opinion on how to do it.

White rouge is bascially jewelers rouge... many times they are used in place of each other. anyways, thanks for the help. That's what I need to know.
If anyone has used compounds before ... how do you know your not taking the other compound and putting in on the wheel?
