chevydrvr, the mustang and challenger aren't exempt and they're not nearly as ugly.
Senior Member
I don't see how it is ugly, but hey...that's your opinion. It was designed off the 69 camaro. Was that one ugly too? It's funny how everybody at the 5th gen sites think 3rd gens are ugly. And vise-versa.
They did what they could. Of course they could have done more but since when does anybody realize that and do EVERY thing they can.

They took a cool looking car from the 60's and crapped all over it and called it a new and improved look. The 'vette is a nice looking slim sports car. The nose of the 5th gen looks like it was rammed into a wall.

the blind spots on the 5th gen kill it for me.
thats why i love driving 3rd gens the most, that huge hatch window, i can see EVERYTHING. and i know right where the end of my car is for backing up and such
and one more thing they did right with the 4th gens is that nice interior

Are you driving the same car that I am? I can't stand the blind spots in the gta. I have to almost swing my head out the window to tell if a car is on the side of me, not to mention the tiny side mirror.Originally Posted by Convoy25

I've had the same issue with blind spots in my 3rd gens. Just gotta use my head and my mirrors. I probably ran a few little ole ladies off the road before I learned this.

I'm going to really rock the boat here. I've read this entire thread and I am suprised at all of the 4th and 5th gen hate. Here is how I would rate them.
1. 5th
2. 4th
3. 3rd
4. 1st
5. 2nd
I've currently own a 3rd and 5th and used to drive a '96 V6 with T-tops. Hope to buy a 4th SS in the next 5 years or so. My dad has a '67 vert that might be mine someday. Like most, my pick of 2nd gens would be a '70 or '71.
Looks are important, and the '83 is beautiful. My 305 has been cammed, has a full aftermarket exhaust, K&N and a few other things and is still a dog. The '10 SS is a rocket! Of course, I like the looks of the 5th gen the best of all Camaro's so far too, but it is hands down the funnest to drive of the 3 I currently have access to.

I have only read through a couple of replies so not sure if im repeating anyone, but I think 3rd gens get this comment bc of the boxy/straightedge styling vs other generations.
I love the styling and uniquness!!! Give it some time, the more years go by, the more curvy cars get, the more unique thirdgens will be and then may be prized like a 69 camaro (If that makes any sense lol)

Yeah, I like the 5th gens too. I was just reading in my new issue of Motor Trend that for 2011 the base V6 model will make 312hp, amazing considering the old 2.8 (or 3.1, or 3.4) didn't make even half that.Originally Posted by roadstar

Just wanted to add that the biggest drawback to the 5th gen is the price, they are no longer affordable to the average middle class person, even the V6 model.

unfortunately you're 100% correct. how many people will take their car to a race track of any kind? about 25%? how many people will use that high end stereo, heated seats, GPS, ect? EVERYONE! todays cars are shoved full of toys to make driving it more than just about the driving. as people that would sacrafice all those toys to make a car faster we're the minority. that's not the real definition of a sports car if you ask me, but not everyone gets that.Originally Posted by chevydrvr

It's slimmed down a little. Who knows...there is speculation and i guess it was confirmed that a z28 will be coming out within the next couple years...that will most likely weigh less. And then after that the 6th gen is going to be based off of a new smaller base. We'll see. Senior Member

In my opinion, the 3rds are by far the most attractive third gens. I've owned 5 third gens (have 3 now), and 1 fourth gen. I love my 4th gen for the powetrain, comfort and build quality that is vastly superior to 3rd gens. That's it, though. The style of the 3rds, along with the fact that so many are unique with the vast variety of trim/engines/color schemes available, make them preferred to me.
With the advent of option packages, most 4th gens are packaged pretty much the same. Choose leather or cloth, t-tops or no, and that's about it. With third gens, there's uniquneness in my own garage. My 86 TA has a power seat..the other 2 don't...yet the '91 RS has leather. But, the TA doesn't have a power trunk release while the other 2 do...that's just the start of it.
I don't think 4th gens are ugly by any stretch, but the thirds are better IMO...

i think iroc's expecially with there louvered hood would probaly attract the most attention to an young kid or younger guy because of their sharp angles and very supercar look, out of 1-5th gens.
Aside from the fact that third gens are the best Fbody, I will list in no particular order my favorite looking Fbodies:
1> 86-90 Iroc (that's why I got one!) and convertible Iroc
2> 88 (and similar) GTA & Formula
3> TTA!
4> 71 Z28 (grows on you as you age)
5> 4th gen TA's can look good
Now back to the whole 3rd gen is best thing. These are the most versatile car of the bunch. They have a great mix of old and new that makes them suitable for any direction you want to go. Nicely accented with modern conveniences like AC, power windows, power antenna and cruise control, but freed from the stress of overloaded gadgetry such as GPS, automatic locks, satellite radio, and things that make decisions for you! Plus if you really want all of that, you can throw a 4th gen interior and wiring into it and have that.
Every time I get into my Iroc, forgetting that the turbo is there, it's like going back in time. I still have the cassette radio in it. I turn the key and starts up. I don't have to hold the brakes to go into gear. I can drive around with my lights off. I love it!

I love them all, all generation all styling. I also love fords, dodge whatever it is I will love it if its tastefully done. My wife thinks i am crazy because i want so many different cars (I wish i could be like Jay Leno lol). This also goes for imports like I said before if its tastefully done i will like it.
But i am a child of the 80's so i grew up watching Knight Rider and of course the minute i had the chance to buy a 3rd gen trans am i jumped on it. I love the front end, the slots for the lights the beefy looking front bumper just everything. The camaro's are also sexy if i could afford to have two cars i would definitely own an iroc with t-tops.

A neighbor has a Yellow 5th gen and to be honest, its alright but not for me. I do like the front end of it though, it might be one of the best looking front ends. Its a nice car but not for me, call it blind but my 3rd gen Camaro has everything I will ever need and its simple. What else can you want.

Sorry but I don't believe that at all. I don't care if the car is heavy, but it doesn't have to look heavy too. The only car that remains slim looking is the Corvette. Everything else on the road looks like a whale on wheels. The reason the Camaro is huge/SUV looking, is not because of modern comforts. It's because designers purposely designed it like that. Fat is the new beautiful, I guess. When I'm sitting next to a 2010 Camaro(or even Challenger) at a red light and have to look up to see the driver, that's sad.Originally Posted by chevydrvr

I don't have the actual design of the car, just how tall and fat it is. I've photoshopped the 2010 Camaro before just to see what it would look like slim, and I liked it. It's all in the designers. And seems 4x4 awkwardly ghetto wheeled cars are the cool thing anymore. Anyway, just my opinion. Everybody has them, some will agree, some will not.

Well to defend detroit somewhat you would have to look up at the drivers of 69 maro's n birds, and stangs n challangers too. Gen 3 forward F bodies have you practically laying down in the car by comparisson. I don't support the fat is fabulous philosophy, but it's nothing new. Compare the cars from the 20's and 30's to the "fat fendered" cars of the 40's. I grew up in a street rodders home as a kid thats why i know. History repeats there's only so much you can do to sheet metal sitting on 4 wheels and still be practical.Originally Posted by JimmyDavidson

When Chrysler came out with the new Challenger they didn't make it tubby, so why make a tub out of the 5th gens? Don't get me wrong it's a free county, but the new Camaro just doesn't look even remotely like the 1st gens.

How doesn't it look like the first gens? You can clearly see it especially from a side view with the curves from the front to the door and the door back. That's only one of the similarities. They also have the rear quater panel "gills" or what ever you want to call them. The pointed grill with inset headlights. The only pic I could find of a first gent hat really showed the shape of teh body is a Z28/RS though.Originally Posted by Stevolwevol

Yeah it's bigger, of course it it, so are almsot every car out there. That;s ebcasue of all the stuff the federal laws forcing into the cars. Think of the 1st gens and other early cars...what did they not have that modern cars of today do? Airbags? Crush zones? impact bars, mirrors and other things. IT all adds up. I mean look at the 06 silverado and look at the 07. It looks freaking enormous compared to the 06. Why? The government.

all that extra stuff doesnt mean the car has to be huge. Look at the bmw's and other import sports cars, even some domestic cars, they are still small and have the same safety and emissions crap. the mini for crying out loud!Originally Posted by chevydrvr

You are correct, can't argue with anything you said. You do have to look up at the drivers of a lot a 69s. However, those cars were made before the ground huggers of today lol. They sit higher and have more ground clearance. Whereas 5th gens do sit higher, AND are ground huggers... which means they look super fat. Also not saying it's a new idea, but I don't like any car before 64ish, because of the same reason.Originally Posted by NAASBC355

I don't hate the 5th gen, it is growing on me. But I'll never say "Wow this is a beautiful design"
With that said I have a comparison picture of a 5th and a 1st gen overlapping each other. The picture should be fairly proportionately correct. The difference in 1st/5th gens specifations are:
Wheelbase: 108/112.3
Length: 186/190.4
Height: 51/54.2

I also photoshopped the 5th gen to my liking. If the 5th gen looked more like this then I would be happy with it. Though I'm unsure if I made the front too small or something, but point is still the same. My photoshop has about the same proportions as the 69 but is definitely a modern looking car. I moved the front wheel back to match the 69s nicer wheelbase.

I'll also link the the original picture incase anyone wants to see that as well: http://image.motortrend.com/f/102926...+side_view.jpg
Also the reason the new silverado is bigger, is because people like big trucks and suvs... so the designers are catering to those people. I guess they believe the same goes for cars.

Look at that resemblance! They're practically the same car, which = ew.
My opinion is as follows:
1st Gen Camaro - Sexy.
1st Gen Firebirds - Sexy.
2nd Gen Camaros - The ugliest.
2nd Gen Firebirds - Meh, alright, kind of good looking.
3rd Gen Camaros - Pretty good looking for the era they're from.
3rd Gen Firebirds - Also pretty good looking.
4th Gen Camaros (LT1-era) - Ugly.
4th Gen Camaros (LS1-era) - A little better, but too plain looking. Just a boring design.
4th Gen Firebirds (LT1 & LS1) - Sexy.
Basically I love first gen Camaros, and fourth gen Firebirds.
5th Gen - Not an F-body, so I don't care!

. now the 2nd and 4th gens well they are both product of kissing cousins lol

Fair response to each his own really. When it's broken down on the side of the road I hate the way every car looks really. Don't read too much into what I said before either the 1st gens to me are my seccond favorite body design of all time falling behind C2 Corvettes especially the 63 grand sport. Best looking car ever made period. 1st gen camaro comes seccond to the vettes and everything else looks like poo to me. Thats just me though I don't think any less of anyone or any car by how it looks. Im an engine guy thats where my intrests lie.Originally Posted by JimmyDavidson
Also not saying it's a new idea, but I don't like any car before 64ish, because of the same reason.I don't hate the 5th gen, it is growing on me.
Also the reason the new silverado is bigger, is because people like big trucks and suvs... so the designers are catering to those people. I guess they believe the same goes for cars.

ok, i'll give up I know I was battling against opinions I wouldn't have never won anyway. it just bothers me that so many people think it's huge. If the 5th gen was small like jimmydavidson posted, it would like not look right. Maybe that's also why it's SO DAMN BIG. It's not even that big I think it's the perfect size and shape to fit in in the world. I saw one at a car show and I didn't say , wow this thing is huge! No, I just said wow! I love this thing.
I love the 5 generation F-bodys even if I hate the 75 to 81 rear windows but my favorite are the 3rd gen because of their well balanced design. (the proportion are perfect) I disagree with the one who are thinking that's the ugliest f-body, for me the 3rd gen Trans am are the best looking cars ever build.
I think people don't like this generation because of the powerless engines that GM used on the 3rd gen while it is one of the best handling and aerodynamic f-body.

98-02 WS6 Trans Ams give me half a chubb, but my '84 T/A with a WS6 hood gives me a full one.

The only pic I could find of a first gent hat really showed the shape of teh body is a Z28/RS though. You kind of miss the point there buddy. Everyone here knows what a first gen looks like. Everyone here also knows what a fifth gen looks like. It's obvious the fifth gen was inspired by the first gen, but I, like most people here, think the fifth gen is ugly, and the first gen is beautiful. The fifth is just bloated and squished up in strange directions. Its a basket of compromises for the sake of style and function in all the wrong ways.
The reason the fifth gen is so heavy has a lot to do with the Zeta-platform. It's just inherently heavy. Ford managed to get the new mustangs in the 3300 lb range just like our thirdgens. You can't blame creature comforts and modern safety standards when Ford has to deal with the same ones. The GTO was also incredibly heavy and it was a Zeta platform car too. Im sure it's a good platform, but weight isnt one of its strengths.

how about this for a "2010 camaro"

I must say that first pic looks very nice. My barber showed me a pic of a 2010 Camaro that was "made" into a T/A. It looked really good, but wasn't real.
