Black paint?

Getting my camaro bodywork done and paint job, wanting a black paint and yellow stripes.

I thought canary yellow vinyl under clear coat would be great. But can't figure what kind of black I want to go with it.

Wondering if anyone could help me, don't know really where to look for types of blacks?

go to a paintshop. They'll have a massive book of colors with their color codes.

Maybe Dupont or House of Kolor has something online in one of their archives? I never checked, but they might.

Re: Black paint?

What kind of stripes were you thinking (gfx, racing, hood only, hockey)? Don't see too many color combos like that. I think it would look good if there wasn't too much yellow. Curious to hear what your are thinking of.

I was researching black paint a while back for my car. I thought all black paint was the same. Turns out most black paint has very small amounts of other colors (brown, white). These vary from manufacturer mainly with stock black paints. Some "blacks" will appear slightly brown in sun for example. Dupont color code 9900 (99k) is completely black toner and will be pure black. A painter I spoke with about repainting my car said he just gets pure black toner from paint store for any brand he will spray. So I don't think you have to shell out $$$ for Dupont base coat paint. Some people like to put blue/purple candy color into the black paint to make it pop. On top of that you can get black in different gloss levels (full gloss, semi gloss, metallic, etc).

If going with just black toner, most budget paint brands seem to work well. Good black paint job comes from the body prep work. If doing two stage paint (base coat, clear coat), a good brand of clear coat in several layers seems to be key in achieving that "deep" black look.

Sherwin Williams has automotive paint specialty stores (not the house paint stores). You have to look on their website for these locations since they aren't all over. They should be open later or at least on weekends and have paint books at counter.

Eastwood.com has good viewable paint samples

Good luck!

Re: Black paint?

The problem with researching colors online, is that it can depend on your monitors ability to show colors correctly & you cannot just take it out in the sunlight & see how it truly looks outside.

See if you can go look at paint books during your lunch. Maybe go for a 2hr lunch, to give you plenty of time & eat light/fast.

Re: Black paint?

Thanks for the links and tips. Its going to be 2 stage. I'm wanting a stripe setup like the chevelles had, but about 3/4s down the hood and all the way back wrapping my spoiler lip, but not down the bumpers. So probably a couple more layers of clear coat would give that depth to the black? i'll ask the body shop. thanks again!
