Re: satin paint
I did my 86 in satin black. Its just krylon but it looks real nice compared to what it looked like before IMO. I'm gonna get her professionally painted later on after she's on the road.

Re: satin paint
A couple of months ago I painted my wife's Miata olive drab green. It was totaled and the insurance company let me keep it. So, I fixed it and this is the color she picked.

Easiest paint job I've ever sprayed.

Re: satin paint
you both used cans correct? i want to do red with a clear coat but im not sure how it will look. my dad recently painted his ranger sating black with spray paint, and theres not really any streaks or weird marks. id really love to see red on a thirdgen because different body lines emphasize it in different ways imo

Re: satin paint
No, the green was not rattle can.
I bought a gallon of it on ebay for $60. It was advertised as ready to spray. I poured it into my purple Harbor Freight gun and sprayed it on. I used rattle can automotive primer under it. This is the final result.
If you're going to try satin in 2 stage then you spray regular paint and then use a clear with flattener in it.

Re: satin paint
The flattener gives you the flat or satin finish.
Yes, you can wash the car but I don't advise waxing it.
I'd recommend a single stage paint for satin finish, personally. It's much easier, and if you don't like it flat then you can clear coat it to make it glossy again.

Re: satin paint
There are different stages of "flat" which actually refers to the level of gloss. That's just a generic term for the type of finish.
The stages of gloss are:
Flat
Matte
Satin
Semi gloss
Reduced gloss
Full gloss
The green I sprayed came out the perfect sheen for us. It's not flat, it still has the semi-gloss/satin look that we were going for.

Re: satin paint
if you want to "wax" it, you only wax something to bring out the shine in the car... you need gloss.. the satin is exactly that.. not a gloss finish.. same with matte and flat, you choose those finishes because of the lack of "gloss".. not to wax those to make it shine.
If you are worried about UV protection, you probably want a 2 stage paint as stated before.. shoot your color and use a reducer in the clear..

Re: satin paint
so then that would be reduced gloss then correct? besides making it shine it helps water run off and other things.

Re: satin paint
my friend works for a company that makes wraps ive seen their work and its good dont get me wrong but i cant see myself doing that. i thought sating was that dull sorta gloss where it puts emphasis on lines of the car that a solid gloss color doesnt really grab onto. i guess i was wrong and that what i was looking for is different

Re: satin paint
With satin, you can wash as normal. It has the protection against UV and stuff, but you cannot wax it. Defeats purpose of satin.
