Clear coating the rims

Car: 92 camaro RS
Engine: Moded 350 engine
Transmission: 5 speed
Clear coating the rims
Can you apply a new clear coat over your rims, after cleaning them and doing a light wet sanding (1000 grit)???
i have a 1992 camaro that has rims that are untouched, there are some imperfections in the clear coat along the edges, but i want to keep the white paint that is on them. the white looks fine. not fresh/ shiny out of the spray gun, but kinda close, not terrible.
i want them to shine again. will the clear coat do that?
