Tinting windows "myself"...

Jeez! This isn't easy! I do have a pro helping me along so its not really ALL myself. I'm putting 20% Solargard on the 2 side windows and the rear (was going to do 3M but was talked out of it...personal preference of my friend the tinter, they're both great). Life time warranty which is perfect if there are any issues with it in the future, just go to the local tinter who carries it and they fix it. The 20% was dark enough, but not pitch black. Looks DANGEROUS on my car which is black on black! Just got them on, squeegeed them and going to sand/file the edges of the driver/passenger windows because I took it right to the lip; no gap. I apologize if this is a lame post, but I couldn't find any posts on do-it-yourself-tinting so I thought I'd start one. I see A LOT of bad tint jobs! And I'm kinda proud of myself

Noticed you're in cali...Hope you don't get stopped by the cops very often, that tint will be forced to come off if so. I had 20% on my car when i got it, got stopped and they had me remove it. luckily it peeled right off (No razor or goo gone needed) i was surprised. it was a dang nice tint too, no bubbles or other flaws.

Does CA have an Medical Exemption Law? Texas does & I'm exempt. Could do 5% everywhere if I want to be blind at night. Been there done that, wasn't a smart thing to do. Had to roll down my windows at night to see good enough to turn at intersections.

Re: Tinting windows "myself"...

When I had my '88 Formula in Cali a decade ago, I survived with the tint on it, my problem was it got stolen! I had the windows down all the time anyway. I just drove home past several LE officers and no one cared. I can't roll them down till it dries. I guess the whole tint thing is a big deal because they make a completely clear film that blocks UV rays with 0% tint on it. I know a guy who breaks out in sores if he goes even close to the sun, real bad skin cancer, he has a docter's note but can't legally tint the windows due to this new clear UV film that exists. It's probably up to the cop, you show him a Doctor note and a massive skin cancer sore on your head, I doubt he'll give you a ticket. I'm too tan for that! Real states like Texas, don't care about tint laws because they have real crimes. New York never cared either.

The tint looks great. Anybody have scratching issues with the fuzzy brushes that keep pressure on the windows?

Re: Tinting windows "myself"...

itsMikey - Totally dig it! AWESOME!

85FBTranam - Thanks, its all done and just went down the street and took these pictures. I finished the tint and exhaust repairs/put on blacked out tips this weekend. I'm digging it. My old '88 Formula had scratch marks in the tint from going up and down, they were minor though. That was also a decade+ ago, maybe tint is "stronger" now a days?

I think the 20% is pretty dark. Its a sunny day today and its still dark. The car is black which makes it look darker. I have a hard top, so less light gets in there than a T-top. I need to smoke my marker lights I think.

Would you mind elaborating on the materials/process used? I want to have my car tinted but don't want to pay out the butt for someone to do it.

Its a pretty long process (for an amateur like me!) and you need some tools. That is why I recommend having a buddy who's a tinter! Or make one! My friend has done it on the side for like 15 years, he's good and has all the tools. I offered him beer and he helped me a long! The tools are not that expensive and are actually good for other things like a Heat Gun. So you may make a small investment on tools you can use again. I googled it and there are a ton of websites that break down each step. I studied it and had the lap top open as I did it. I also have use of a free Auto Hobby Shop which has everything I need for auto work. I could write out all the steps but it would probably be easier for you to google a pro. Its NOT hard, just time consuming and you may need to buy a tool or two. If you can't find what your looking for I will write it all out for you, let me know.

We used one big sheet for the back. It took me and my 2 buddies to do it! We had to take the truck struts out to get the truck to go way up. One big sheet just makes it.

Looks good, I'm still waiting for them to perfect the Transition Tinting. Electronic tinting is cool also but of course you can't see out of it anymore that sucks.

Re: Tinting windows "myself"...

Beach background on your bad a$$ Pontiac makes it awesome PUNISH3R, nice!

As mentioned before about the fuzzy felt window guides, I believe they are made of out of ostrich feathers from GM.

These are for my 2002 SS, GM# 10257988, I have four ( two for each door )and unsure if these fit the 3rd Gens. Just displaying for show and tell since I have a semi-deep scratch on the interior of my drivers side tinted window. I feel I have to go professional and do both windows just in case one is darker than the other. Sucks that this happened to me but it's my precious SS.

Re: Tinting windows "myself"...

I dont really like black wheels, or "murdered out" cars, or anything along those lines...

But there's a point where anyone going for a certain style with their car, they get to a point where the whole car just flows and fits itself very well. Your car has gotten to that point where I can appreciate it despite disagreeing with your stylistic choices.

In my opinion, that's the threshold anyone doing visual mods should strive for. You can never please everyone, but if you get your style exemplified so well that people cant help but look and just go "Yeah... I wouldn't do it that way, but it does look very nice...." then I think you've accomplished something great.

The tinted windows finished the car for me. The style works very well now.
