Hatch Tint

So I finally have the money to tint the hatch, I'm only doing the hatch because 90% of the time the side windows are down plus I dont have enough to do the side windows but will eventually. I already have the whole windshield tinted with 50% and a 5% band up top plus the shaded so the windshield is kind of dark. What percent should I tint the hatch? Anybody have any pictures of just the hatch and windshield tinted? I was thinkin 20% on the hatch and then either 20 or 35% on the side windows when I get ready to tint. Also how hard would it be tint the side windows myself? I don't mind if its not 100% perfect because you will rarely see them up

Re: Hatch Tint

Door windows are really easy to tint. Very little shrinking and no window frames to worry about.

Re: Hatch Tint

yea My windshield is tinted too . I had to get a doctors note to keep the cops at bay It looks awsome . and my doctor is way cool said I have a reaction to sunlite . as for tinting the doors ..very easy the hatch is a different story .do not 2 pc it (looks like 2 pc) I f you want it to look good take it to a shop , they tint every day and you know what they say practise makes perfect. If you insist on doing it yourself remove the hatch from the car first and do it in the garage or living rm have a hair drier handy. 20% hatch and sides is my opinion . at least keep it the same on hatch and doors.

Re: Hatch Tint

jermdm: I probably will do the door windows myself then.
11ellswray: Yes I had the windshield tinted before I put in the car.
dads old blue 9: I don't have a doctors note, I just did it cause I felt like it. I am not even gonna attempt to tint the hatch, or take it off again (did that enough when I was paintin it). The doors I will probably do myself with the help of a friend.

Re: Hatch Tint

Actually tinting the windshield is illegal. On a safety side of it, It is hard enough to see anything at night and by tinting the windshield you are making it harder to see anything else in your path.. In NY it is illegal to tint the side windows to anything above I believe 85% and the back can be blacked out only if you have 2 side view mirrors. Factory tinting on windows happened many years ago and I think they already include a 95% from the factory. I run 3% on everything but the windshield.. You can't see in, You can't see out if the windows are rolled up. I never drive with the windows up! I use it for privacy and car shows only.

The lower the number the darker the tint.. 3% tint means only 3 percent light can pass through so it is really dark. Before tinting you need the check your local laws..

Tint levels on windows are measured in light transmittance through the combination of the window plus any tint that has been applied to it. The threshold for car window tinting in New York is 70 percent, meaning that for most of the windows, 70 percent of visible light must be able to pass through the window into the vehicle

New York State's window tint statute is found in § 375 (12-a) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law. Subsection 12-a, which discusses window tinting or "light transmittance" at length, was last amended in 1991, increasing the required light transmittance percentage from 35 percent to 70 percent. This 70 percent is the highest required light transmittance percentage by any state, also shared in California and Pennsylvania.

As I previously stated ::: The Lower the number the darker the Tint ::::

100% means that there is no tint
70% which is NY law means there is a light tint
20% is very dark and doesn't allow for much light
3% is Limo Black and doesn't allows very little light through the window
0% means that no light can pass though the window..

I gave your the NYS Law, where are you coming up with this 20% number?

Re: Hatch Tint

Under Vehicle and Traffic Law § 375 (12-a)(b)(1) states that a vehicle's front windshield can only be tinted on the top 6 inches. Like the side windows, that window tint must allow for a "light transmittance" of 70 percent. Additionally, if the top 6 inches of the windshield are covered with a tinted film, the film cannot be reflective.
As for the rear window, § 375 (12-a)(b)(4) allows for the rear window to be tinted to any darkness. However, if the rear window is tinted darker than the allowable 70 percent "light transmittance," the vehicle must have two side mirrors, allowing the driver to see the road and any traffic conditions behind him.
If, however, a vehicle only has one side mirror, § 375 (12-a)(b)(4) states that the rear window can only be tinted as dark as the side windows of the vehicle, allowing for 70 percent of visible light to pass through the window glass and the tint film.

Re: Hatch Tint

Some of you are stating the base ruler for window tint requirements & you correct BUT............

With the Doctor note.....a MEDICAL EXEMPTION.....that negates the law & you can do basically whatever you want. Here in Texas that is how it is & I have had mine since 1992. Always enjoy letting cops go through their whole speech of mine being illegal & getting out their meter to test it. When they are ready to write the ticket, then I pull out the 2 letters that exempt me. #1 is the Doctors letter & #2 is the state DPS letter. They really hate it when I have wasted their time in letting them do everything & not telling them about the letter until the end.

I'm sure other states, like NY, have legal exemptions for it to. Mine was due to a complete cornea replacement that causing sensitivity resulting in even light sunlight being too bright to see well in driving.

So yeah.....With his letter he is exempt.

Re: Hatch Tint

I know there are exemptions but they are not very clear on them. I think he was confused on what 20% is.. It isn't how dark the tint is. It is the Emission of light. He was trying to say 20% all the way around in NY is legal. I gave the law what is legal.. 20% is alot darker than 70%. And IMO tinting the total front window is dangerous and illegal.

Thanks for the reply

Re: Hatch Tint

The only thing that the exemption doesn't apply to is the depth/height of the eyebrow. despite my exemption it still cannot be below the AS-1 line, which is stupid. Our windshields are so laid back that when I had mine done to actually be low enough to be truly effective, mine was like 8". For years nobody said anything, not even the Inspectors. Then the State tightened up & last year the Inspector told me mine wouldn't pass even though it had "passed" for years.

Re: Hatch Tint

That doesn't surprise me any.. I was told that N2O was illegal because it was explosive.. I think many people in a higher office have nothing better to do but come up with dumb laws..

Re: Hatch Tint

All I can think of is that it would need to be something like with needing the shielding from the sun/ultraviolet rays like a skin or eye condition.

my doctor is really cool I live in SC (origionally from Boston) where the sun destroys interiors , so I told him I spent $900 on a new dash and I wanted my windshield tinted to prevent it from happening and he said I can write you a note that says you have a skin condition . due to the hippa law whitch is a health privacy act ,i dont have to tell the cops anything about my 'condition" just need the note , they arn't even alowed to ask what kind of condition I have . In other states it may be different but my winshield is 35%and I have never been pulled over for it going on a yr now , lots of cops here!

Re: Hatch Tint

Alright cool! If i ever have a problem with a cop I'll go get a doctors excuse so I can keep the tint. Walmart has a roll of 20% tint, its 2 feet by 6.5 feet, How many rolls will I need to do just the side windows? 2? Also the shop I'm using is going to tint the hatch for 60$ once I get it completely ready
