removing the rear window defrost lines/wires

Has anyone removed the rear defrost on their back window? My first thought is to use a razor blade but that doesn't work I don't want my back window to look hacked up.

You could watch for parts cars or check scrap yards for rear hatches without rear defrost and replace the whole hatch. My '87 GTA didn't come with rear defrost so the glass is already clear.
