Painting Door Locks

My door locks look pretty bad. Any tricks to painting them? Do I need to tape up the outside mechanism?

Was going to primer, base then clear...

You can buy new covers from moderndaymuscle.com. They aren't expensive and will save a lot of time.

Re: Painting Door Locks

Sooooo... I received those so-called door lock covers and they're a HUUUUUGE waste for the $27.67 I paid for them. First of all, they're NOT painted. They're pretty much just bare steel with what appears to be a half-assed bluing job on them. I was under the impression that these would fit OVER the existing caps. Well they don't. Don't waste your money on these. You're better off painting the existing door lock caps/cylinders.

So, these aren't replacement caps? I was under the impression that you need to remove the door lock assembly, remove the existing caps and replace with these. Aren't these painted black like they look in the picture? If these aren't what they appear to be, I apologize for the referral.

No, they aren't painted, and I don't believe they're meant for the door lock assembly, either. From what I can tell, they appear to be smaller in diameter.

It reads right on their product page:

"Original GM Black Small Lock Cylinder Cap"
"Correct For Glove Box Door And T-Top Locks"

I never went in and read the description. I saw the picture and it's brief description and never even thought they'd be for the interior.

Re: Painting Door Locks

I had my door apart and I painted just one of my door locks. It turned out great! Three coats of satin black and three coats of clear. They look brand new... When I get home I'll post a pic.

There's no real point in using satin, then clearing over it. Unless you did it for more durability. Satin is a finish not a color.

I used matte clear for durability and the locks look like the stock black paint. I wasn't sure how it would work out but they look great!

Re: Painting Door Locks

I love how people say will post a pic when they get home and then they don't. I guess badtenant hasn't made it home in two months....

Don't say you'll do something if you don't plan on following through. Some people look forward to seeing the pics to see if they want to do the same thing. you ask for help (even if you don't take the advice) but then you do some thing different and say it looks good, say you'll post pics for others to look at/Review and then don't.

I guess people on this forum want help but don't like returning the favor.
