April 2016 COTM **Voting Thread**

I had no idea that there were as many elite '91-'92 'Birds on TGO as there are. There are some really nice ones that didn't get nominated. One of these seven will be the next COTM.

Car: 1991 Formula 350, 2002 Grand Prix G

Re: April 2016 COTM **Voting Thread**

My 1991 Formula never started out as a SHOWCAR. I bought it as a leftover and it was my DD until 1996 when severe snow storms forced it into my attached garage. Having my own detailing business at that time, it was well taken care of, but now I began the slow process of DETAILING and adding BOLT-ON handling and performance parts.

Knowing that SLP had a rep for quality aftermarket equipment I added the Siamese Intake Runners and Edlebrock Intake, which made a big difference in mid and top end (from Stock out of breath @ 4,600 rpm to Mod @ 5,300 rpm). Using their Cold Air Intake Box was next as was an Underdrive Pulley. The headers were next with Edlebrock TES Coated inside and out. Last of the major improvements was a 3" polished BORLA with dual dual tips which allowed me to get the SOUND just the way I wanted it. Some smaller items such as an Throttle Body Air Foil, a 160* thermostat and a Hypertech 172*-160* fan switch kept things cooler. A Prom Chip and an MSD 6AL and Blaster Coil were also added. The trans also got a polished aluminum larger capacity oil pan. You get the picture, that each item was added by itself to judge what benefit these parts made. The area by the hood latch opening was signed by Ed Hamburger (founder of SLP)

As far as the handling goes, a set of LCA's and Panhard Bar from Edlebrock was added along with Poly Bushings on all the sway bars. Having the WS6 suspension was good, this made it better. A IROC Wonderbar and a Hotchkis Strut Tower Brace took the shake out of the hood and a set of ALSTON SFC made the car 100% tighter.

The paint on the car is STILL the original Bright Red #81. I used a 1500 compound to smooth out the orange peel and made it flat which after 25 years looks like poured glass. The undercarriage was treated with ZBART when new and it still looks like it came out of the Dealer, but now it has 62,000 miles on it. The brake rotors have been detailed and GT dimpled rotors help out. The Black Trans Am Diamond Spoke Wheels were a NO COST option, but was not well known until the 1992 models starting putting more of them on. Some small items such as the molded bird on the nose from the 1993 Firebird replaced the decal and GT emblems beneath the Bird on the sail panel. A WS6 emblem as attached to the right side edge of the rear lights, which are 1991-92 GTA tail lights.

I have come to believe that ONLY 1,197 Formulas were built with the L98 Corvette motor and performance package. Total Formulas made was about 5,500 so about 20% had this package. Add up the age of this ANTIQUE (how many survived) and who would have thought to make a showcar out of this model back then. I now go to car shows and I'am the only Firebird 3rd Gen there and very few people can believe this is a SURVIVOR. It was featured in a 4 page article in High Tech Performance Magazine and the last PRINTED High Performance Pontiac magazine dated October, 2012 which made a 6 page article which describes every little item I have here. A company called "In the News" made up two plaques with master copies of the 6 page article from High Performance Pontiac magazine. There is also a photo in there with me Drag Racing the car. I won 3 out of the last 5 years in the P4 HPP racing classes.

Thanks for the nomination and I hope to deserve your vote!

The interior is also original (except for a headliner) and I've added some GTA touches in there, such as a Leather Steering Wheel (PONTIAC INSERT painted Silver), the Leather Brake handle and a Leather Gear Shift **** from a Bonneville (looks like a manual shift ball) and the upgraded 5-Band Equalizer Cassette Radio. It also has a Carbon Fiber accent kit on the dash-console (Very rare SLP Plaque)-door handle trim and the area that held the Map Pocket which has a GT and Competition Group emblem. Custom made Llyods Floor Mats (with chrome GT inserts) with high tech Brake and Gas pedals trim and a LED 3rd Brake mod that lights up "350". I also put some iron on badges that say in Red Formula GT on the door panels and FIREBIRD on the head rests. I used this theme to accent the fact that this is how GM COULD have made a better Formula instead of the bean counters trying to save every penny.

Could somebody PLEASE help a NON Computer dummy, make the photos larger.
ADDED SOME INTERIOR PICTURES-HOPE YOU ENJOY SOME DIFFERENT ADD-ONS!
ALSO BRAKE CALIPER AND UNDER HOOD BLANKET!
PLUS UNDERCARRIAGE-3rd BRAKE LITE "350" LED and HPP MAGAZINE PLAQUES

Car: 1992 Firebird
Engine: Stealth Rammed 412 with TC78 Turbo
Transmission: '93 T-56

Re: April 2016 COTM **Voting Thread**

Thanks so much for the nomination! It's an honor to be competing against such gorgeous cars!!

The car is a '92 Firebird, originally a 305 TBI automatic that I picked up for $800 with about 81,000 miles on the clock when I wrecked my '84 Trans Am due to a blown out Russell steel braided brake hose:

Here's the '92 when I bought it:

I had to fix some rot in the driver's floor and front cowl/rocker areas and I stripped the car down to a shell, sandblasted the engine bay and door jams and repainted them Sunset Orange Metallic to match the color I chose for the body. I also cleaned up the undercarriage and coated the entire thing with POR-15

I transplanted the Stealth Rammed 350 I built from the '84 into the '92 along with the T-56 topped with a Hurst Billet Plus shifter, 3.27 geared 9 bolt Posi (with new cones and springs) with PBR disc brakes, and Commander 950 engine management system.

I had never been a huge fan of the '91-'92 Firebird "banshee" nose and ground effects, but I decided to stick with them, although I added a RAI style hood, 4th gen replica spoiler, and '85-'90 Trans Am front fenders with "air extractors" behind the front wheels.

All the bodywork and paint was done by me with a LOT of help from a very good friend of mine and my wife (then girlfriend!). We took one whole week, tore the car apart, blocked it out, painted it, re-assembled, and did the first stage of wetsanding/buffing:

Here's an action shot of my friend Tom laying down the basecoat!

I got a C5 ZO6 front brake kit from Ed Miller using the C6 Z51 13.5" cross drilled brake rotors. I then wrapped the brakes in 18" ROH RT wheels and fresh rubber.

I also swapped the 4th Gen Trans Am seats and center console into this car that I had in the wrecked '84 (sorry for the dark pics, winter hibernation is still in effect LOL!).

The car also has Spohn adjustable tubular rear control arms with poly bushings, a TDS Wonderbar, and UMI subframe connectors welded in.

I was able to participate in the Hot Rod Power Tour in 2008 and the car completed the entire Long Haul from Maine to Arkansas and back with only one issue - a shredded serpentine belt.

The car went under the knife in late 2012 and got a bit of a power update. I guess it'd been together too long and/or it was too reliable, so I decided to add a custom single turbo setup using a Turbonetics TC78 turbo, and retaining A/C and all other "creature comforts". After I built the turbo setup on the 350 I upgraded to a Walbro 400 LPH fuel pump (I got the e85 compatible version, which they tell me is actually closer to a 430 LPH output) and installed a RaceTronix HotWire fuel pump wiring kit.

Re: April 2016 COTM **Voting Thread**

In 2013 I popped a head gasket on the 350. After trying to get head studs to seal up in the stock block for quite a while I gave up and decided it was time to build a new engine using a Dart SHP block to elminate my head stud sealing issues!

The new engine displaces 412 cubic inches and houses a Sonny Bryant 3.8" stroke billet crankshaft, Carrillo 6" H-Beam connecting rods, and Wiseco forged pistons. It got a custom ground cam from Bullet Racing Cams and is topped off with AFR 220 heads.

(doesn't really look any different than the old engine did LOL!)

I also upgraded to a McLeod StreetTwin twin disc clutch good for approximately 1200 HP along with a scattershield, just in case anything bad happens at the track LOL!

The new engine was treated to a new Holley HP EFI engine management system which has made tuning and drivability even better than with the old setup.

Now I've run into the (not unexpected) fact that the turbocharger I have now is the limiting factor to how much horsepower I will be able to make. The engine should be good for anything I ever want to throw at it, and I'll just have to find a way to shoehorn a turbo with a bigger exhaust side into the space I have!!

Here's a video of the new setup on the rollers. It put down 495 RWHP and 698 RWTQ (peak torque hit at 3500 RPM!). Please excuse the excessive tire smoke from my rolling burnout on the dyno LOL! The tiny exhaust side on the current turbo really choked the engine out, but it makes for quite a fun ride on the street with almost instant torque anywhere in the normal driving range!

Dyno Video:

Here are a few glamour shots, including one of my more recent upgrades to 1991-1992 Trans Am tail lights. Hopefully I can get some new pictures of the car this summer!

(I spy an intercooler! )

(Sorry I don't have a better shot of the tails yet!)

Next up is re-constructing the turbo setup to fit a larger turbocharger (probably will require an aftermarket front accessory drive system) and getting a 9" rear end under the back of the car so I can really use all this power!!

Sorry for taking up all the space here, but I enjoy sharing about my car and all the work I've put into it. I'm very proud to say that all the work has been done by me (either exclusively, or with the help of friends) and I've really enjoyed developing it to the point it is at now. I've also enjoyed learning and sharing a lot with the entire community here at thirdgen.org over the years.

Thanks again for the nomination and opportunity to share my vehicle with all of you!

-Paul

Car: 1991 Trans Am GTA
Re: April 2016 COTM **Voting Thread**

Wow! Thank you so much to all of those that nominated my car to be considered as COTM. There are some REEEEEALLY nice cars competing this month and I'm truly honored to be amongst this fine group.

My Trans Am GTA is a 1991 and I've owned it since 1994. The car currently has around 57k miles. I've had a lot of plans for this car that never really got set into motion since I've had so many other projects over the years, but everything will get done one of these days. As of right now, I've had the seats recovered with Beechwood colored Katzkin leather, the rear seats are from a 1989 Turbo Trans Am... the ones with the built-in headrests. The stock 305 motor was swapped with an L98.

The car has been lowered with Eibach Sportline springs accompanied with KONI adjustable shocks. I plan on going with a set of weight jacks. The wheels are Hawk's 17 x 9 GTA replicas and they're wrapped with Yokohama 275-40-17 tires. Hopefully I'll get the digital dash swap done this year... it's just sitting in the garage just waiting to go in.

Not much to tell about the car... I just keep it looking nice. Thanks again for the nomination and good luck to all the other entrants!

Re: April 2016 COTM **Voting Thread**

Thank you guys for the nomination. Especially since there were so many other clean examples.

I purchased the car in 2004 fresh out of high school. I was helping a friend find a car to buy. When we saw the car he immediately called his mother who just laughed at him when he said it was a Firebird. I told him if he cant buy it then I will. It has over 250k miles on it and since it isn't my daily driver, I drive it hard almost every time I drive. I have built it thus far to have fun in it and that is exactly what I do.

Here is a list of what I have done so far. There is still so much more I want to do, including an LSx/m6 swap.

-Repainted in 2010.
-XXR 526 Wheels. 18x9 fronts and 18x10.5 in the rear.
-275/35/18 fronts and 295/35/18 in the rear. Tires are KDW2's.
-Founders strut mounts
-KYB shocks and struts
-1.75" LoTec lowering springs
-UMI Subframe Connectors
-Global West A-arm bushings
-Hotchkis strut tower brace
-Factory Wonderbar
-Founders adjustable rod-ended rear LCA and Panhard bar
-91/92 T/A taillights tinted
-Ram air hood is functional.
-Windows tinted

Future plans
-Install the CTS-V brakes that I have already.
-LSx/T56 swap

This is the first carshow I ever attended with it. This was the 2004 Florida fbody meet.

First car show.

8 Years later I was finally able to get around to putting money into the car.

Engine bay before I updated the suspension.

Re: April 2016 COTM **Voting Thread**

these are excellent cars this month.

i do have something to say about the voting though. not saying that there is anything wrong with this month's voting...at all. someone once suggested that we should shut off the ability to "View Poll Results" which I don't think is feasible, but i might attach the following sentiment to future voting threads:

There are no wasted votes here. We have the luxury voting for something we like. We do not have to choose the lesser of two evils or the better of two liars like a political campaign. The running of the free world is not at stake here, and we do not have to cast our votes according to who the polls say "can win."

So please...vote for the car that YOU like best - even if that car is way behind in the poll. This would not be a wasted vote. This way, the nominee who's car YOU like best will at least know that some people DID like his or her car best.

And you never know, if everyone votes with their hearts, those underdogs just might rally.

I agree with both prior statements! When I saw I was up against TWO gorgeous Firehawks I felt the same way I do when I'm lumped in with gorgeous 1st Gen Camaros at car shows...not a chance LOL! I can't believe the Firehawks (and ALL the other super clean cars in this poll) aren't getting more love. They sure deserve it!!

I hope some more of the nominees get a chance to post about their cars because I know that will help them, and I'd really like to see more details too!!

You shouldn't feel that way. Gorgeous build! I haven't seen your car in a while. I didn't know you built such a beast.

Re: April 2016 COTM **Voting Thread**

I even nominated one of those gorgeous Firehawks, but to be honest, how can I vote for it if I can't see it inside or under the hood? I wont vote for it if the owner doesn't respond with pictures of his car. There are ALLOT of pretty thirdgens on the outside that are trashed on the inside if you know what I mean. I dont think that is the case here, but there are still NO Pictures to go by. None of you guys should feel your car is inferior to ANY Firehawk during a voting poll. You guys obviously have alot of work in your cars and they are gorgeous! They deserve the votes they get!

Do you not have any pictures of your interior or under the hood?

I didn't even think of posting the interior. I'll try and take a picture of that. Really the only things I have done are swap to a 5speed console and install an aftermarket stereo.

The $100 is to show the depth of the lip in the rear. It was the only picture I could find that showed that.

I have been working to Detail the engine bay so I can post an updated picture of that. Time is limited for me though so I can only chip away at it little by little.

I would also like to take pictures of the undercarriage but that I know is dirty. Keeping this car clean is impossible where I live

If the weather in this lovely state of Maine that I live in (please note extreme sarcasm!!) would cooperate I would have gotten better interior pictures. Unfortunately the car is still in hibernation right now the pictures suck, but I figured they were better than nothing

I'm really surprised how few of the nominees have posted in this thread. It's kind of disappointing...

OK GUYS, I got the idea I ADDED 24 PHOTOS from my FORMULAS INTERIOR-BRAKE CALIPERS-UNDERCARRIAGE-HOOD BLANKET-HPP MAGAZINE PLAQUES and 3rd Brake Lite "350" LED. I added these to my original post #2. It is in the start of the Voting Thread and they are all Thumbnail pictures.

Being this was my first time in this contest, I was not sure how many photos was TOO much. Hope this gives you a better idea on how MUCH DETAILING goes into keeping an ORIGINAL 25 year old Bird looking new and adding personal tasteful mods. Just one more effort from all the computer knowledge people to PLEASE add the LARGER upgrade to my recent pictures. Thanks again for all your suggestions!

Add as many as you want! A big part of the COTM contest is bringing great examples to the forefront for us to look at. It's fun to see who wins, but I get more enjoyment out of seeing all of the great rides that are nominated each month.

I love you car and the SLP parts; wish they still made them...

Ripped the interior out of my car a few weeks ago so I could lay down Dynamat Xtreme throughout the entire interior of the car and also to do the digital dash swap, so no... no interior photos. Here are a few photos of the Katzkin Leather covered seats OUTSIDE of the car, though.

COME ON PEOPLE, there is ONLY 1 1/2 days left to VOTE for your FAVORITE. I think we have MORE than 66 voters who care to voice their opinion about who's car they think is best. The COTM owners have ALL showed that there is an intense amount of WORK and PRIDE to maintain what used to be "We Build Excitement" and WE have to keep that slogan ALIVE!

I really appreciate ALL the comments. I don't have pictures of any MAJOR work on the car because it has been maintained for the last 25 years and out of the weather the last 20 (not washed or driven in the rain). Some of the pictures show very small details, but that is what I wanted. I want it look STOCK, but if you look carefully, there is something different.

I hope if there is a next time, to discover how the hell to enlarge the photos. I don't have a camera phone, and I can't seem to find what happened to PHOTOSHOP.com. I took a lot of pictures on there and was able to enlarge them right from their website. I digress too much. Congrats to QuadGoat on his win!

Is there a way to lock COTM Thread at the top of all the threads instead of bumping it daily??? It wouldn't get buried and participation would be greater.

Its been mentioned before about lack of participation. IDK, JMO.

Congrats to Quadgoat! (unless a miracle happens)

77 total votes......WOW......what a turnout! sarcasm

Thanks guys, I'm truly honored, but also surprised the turnout wasn't higher!

Ed, your car is GORGEOUS! Modified cars can be fun, but there is a LOT to be said for a well maintained, original, but slightly modified beauty like yours! It was truly a privilege to be included in this month's COTM along side you and the other fine examples of 91-92 birds represented here!

Thank you everyone for the support, it is an amazing feeling to see one's hard work recognized and appreiated by others!

Re: April 2016 COTM **Voting Thread**

Thanks goes out to those that nominated my car to compete against all of these magnificent looking machines! All of the cars here are beautiful examples of the last of the 3rd gen birds. Extra special thanks to all of you that voted for my car!

Congrats to quadgoat... you truly do have a car that you can be proud of because you put a lot into it to get it where it is today! As far as voter turnout goes, I'm not really surprised with the small numbers since I've always had the impression that a lot of our members don't care for the Bird's '91 - '92 styling as much as the earlier car's styling. Oh well... it was still nice to have this category for this month's COTM.

A double extra thanks goes out to Linson for making this category happen and doing such a fine job with organizing the whole COTM shabang from month to month.

Re: April 2016 COTM **Voting Thread**

AH HA, FOUND OUT WHERE ALL MY OLD PICTURES WERE HIDING. I have an older computer where I keep some of the pictures that I was not able to transfer to my new one. It is called PHOTOBUCKET.COM. I thought it was Photoshop.com. Now I can ENLARGE my photos right from the site and load them onto my post. Not that the thumbnail photos were bad, but it is MUCH more impressive to see them large, than to take the time to address each one at a time!

I guess I spoke too soon. Can't figure out how I did add them to a post. As Bugs would say "What a Maroon".

To add a photo inline in a post just put at the end that will make the image appear right in your post, and not as a thumbnail.
