Sorry to hear about that. How did you get it home?
The same thing happened to me,except it was my front wheel. The second I stopped at a light the wheel just came right off and the rotor sat on the inside edge of the wheel.Couldn't get a jack or tow truck under it,so we had to tie a chain to it and pull it up a flatbed.Ouch. And guess how it all happened. Doing the brakes and forgot to tighten the one wheel becuase I was pulled away for a few minutes.

Don't feel to bad I've had it happen to 3 friends of mine while we were in high school and it almost happened to me once. I luckily remembered about a mile away and caught it before any lugs came off. Two were down to the final threads. LOL
What was funny with one of my friends is we found all five lugs each about 10 feet apart from each other in almost a perfect line down the road.

Oh man at least im not the only one
Thanks ...at least im not the only one
The terrible part of this is that the car hit on the floor so i couldnt be able to put a Jack on it or anithyng ...so ihad to call the tow truck (i wasnt alone and my friend has the money for it )and the damage can be repaired ...
the threads were marked now on the wheel ...and i lose some threads...i lose all the lugs....and the rear fender (below the red light)is bended all inside(that was the part that hit the floor)
but at least ..i was cruisin after a Red light
what would happened if i lose my wheel at 50 MPH ?
THANKS TO ALL ¡
HOW CAN I FIX THE THREADS ? I DIDNT CUT ANY BUT THE LUG IS NOW DIFFICULT TO TIGHT

Your not the only one!
Hey a while back when I owned my 1986 Buick Lesabre.
And me and my friends were tightning the wheels back on my car after we did something (I dont remeber what it was) but all I remeber is that my friend didnt tighten the from left driver side wheel. The wheel was fine for days. After it started to make a funny noise. And I when Iwould drive people would notice me driving around and this damn noise was always around. Than One day at school I was going to leave for lunch wiht my friends until one of them noticed that my whole rim was eatin up hahaha from the screws cause we never tightned it enough ahhaha ahhahaha each time I think of this, it makes me laugh. ANyways I went home and brought another rim I had sitting at home. ANd went to my schools autodept. and my friend that had class changed it for me. And all was fine.

sammycalderon : You can have the studs changed. They are only about a couple dollars a piece. You can have the stripped/bad ones pressed out and new ones pressed right back in.

Yep, It sucks, I have my two experiences to draw from:
Four-wheeling in my buddie's Jeep, we had the front left brake seize, causing four of the wheel studs to shear and firing the lug nuts off in to the woods like chrome-plated bullets. We hitch-hiked the 20 miles back to town, bought parts and then took the Safari Wagon two miles up a creek bed to drag the jeep out so we could fix it
On my trusty but rusty Safari Wagon, I had a C-clip in the diff fail after only 180K miles, whereupon the right rear wheel, brake drum and half-shaft left the vehicle at around 30 mph. I managed to stop by grinding a 150 foot long groove in the pavement with the shock mount. The wheel contiued down the road, past an Army M.P. directing traffic, and bounced off the side of some Army Colonel's Jaguar. The M.P's saw me and my smoking, three-wheeled heap and informed me that I could retrieve my wayward wheel while they dealt with the Colonel.

Yeah. Just get the studs replaced. They're cheap.
When my dad was in college, he was driving his brother's car, and his brother exclaimed "Look! It's somebody's wheel rolling down the road." My dad kept driving and found out when he pressed the brakes that it was his wheel. Amazing the car stayed level and smooth enough that it acted like the wheel was still on.
the other story is last year at an autocross. A guy was just about finished with the run in his 68 camaro when the right-front wheel flew off. He was doing about 40 mph. The wheel shot up in the air about 30 ft and the car skidded for a good way. Then, the wheel hit the ground and started bouncing fast toward the car and slammed into the bumper hard enough to dent it. The front fender was completely destroyed. From the top of the wheelwell to the door jamb, the fender had bent out and twisted almost 90* straight out. The rotor had about an inch shaved off of it and he had some bent suspension pieces. Somebody fetched the wheel so we could take a look at what had happened. Where the studs go through the wheel, there were golf ball sized holes. The wheel had ripped itself off of the car! A couple of the lugs were gone, but the rest were still on the car with chunks of metal around them still bolted on tight!

been there, done that....got in a magazine for it

i had a shop dismount and remount my tires from my iroc rims to the 4thgen rims, so while it was up on a lift, i had them install the spacers and the wheels. They didn't put washers (which are required) on the spacer lugs, and the first time i went really fast (which happened to be at englishtown for slp day), the lugs loosened, and the wheel fell off as i was parking.
all in all it sucked, but the damage wasn't bad, and the only evidence now is a fender that's not quite the same red
happened to me too...
Second day I had my car on the road I decided to open it up on the highway.... if felt like I went over a huge bump, and then a black thing whizzed by my window... I caught up to it, and figured out it was MY WHEEL! I pulled over, counted to three and the car slammed onto the drum. I ran and got the wheel, robbed a lug off of each wheel and went home.... no damage!

That is so funny.
Same thing happened to me last year when we put lowering springs on my car. We were finishing up the rear end and putting the wheels back on. I was doing the drivers side rear and my friend was doing the pass rear. I only had one lug wrench and he was using it so I just finger tightened my wheel.
Anyways, I go to his side and help him out and we just start talking about where to get some food. Well, I open up the garage and we pull out and I start driving towards the highway.
We are about 1 mile from my house on a 25mph road when I hear this ginding sound coming from the rear. First thought was that my exhaust had fallen off since the car was still level.
As I slow down I see my rear tire come bouncing past me and then the drivers side rear settles on the ground.
My buddy runs up the road about 2 blocks to retrieve the tire and I call my brother up to bring me my lug nuts and a jack ( I thought that I had not even put the lug nuts on, but I did since I was able to drive that far). Brother is on his way and I start walking back the way we came and I found 4 of my lug nuts. It was 11pm at night. I was glad my lugs were chrome.
No damage to the car or wheel, just some scrapes on the shock mount and small scrapes on the brake rotor.
I always double check my lug nuts now.

Oh these stories are great!! now my turn.
I had taken my friends malibu to school one day to show it off (not sure what year). It was so bad *** and I was shooting my mouth off to everyone. Well I lined up a race after school between me and this one kid who had just gotten a new camaro (98 Z28). Well we go to this road by the school and line up. We take off and I'm smokin him until we get to this dead end where we had to make a right onto another road. I turn and I'm nailing the gas when all of a sudden I see the drivers side rear wheel and half shaft pass me!!
The car stayed level the whole time even when I pulled over!! I called some friends and we got a tow truck to get the car back to the shop. Thats when I learned that my friend could SCREAM really load. I ended up buying him the narrowed rear end he wanted. Oh memories.
