2 Tone Paint Schemes

What's the secret to these 2-3 coat paint schemes?,............
The ones that change colors as you drive/walk by?,....

The clear coat on my '91 is peeling like an Irishman in Florida & the IBEW in Cali has got me on vacation for 3 months now,.......
(though I don't bitch),........I wash & wax my car,....& I start to wonder,...."I "can't" make this any worse",...& I don't see the $1500+, for the body/paint job that it'll need,.........(besides,...$1500+ gets a boat behind a ****ty lookin' 'Bird $1500+ quicker than a "good" lookin' 'Bird parked on a jetty w/out me skiing behind it),.............I get a can of an acrlic/laquar spray paint & go, (never painted a thing before).

My techquine isn't all that bad & the only "show"
it'll see is the gravel/dirt road of the job site parking lot, (with the ski-able boat behind it)...now I get thinkin....(I'm in trouble now,...I know),..........

What started as a "a can of spray paint, I'm bored, what if",...thing,.....has now gotten me into a, "it's lookin' better now,....if I sand the edges down,......primer "NOW" the whole car & wet-sand the whole thing,......then,.................

Which brings the the, "how do they do that 2-3 tone paint scheme",...............

(BTY,.....any $4-5k goes to a '68 'Bird),......

It is a special paint that uses tiny prisms to reflect different colors (at least in the original BASF Mystic paint). PPG has their version called Chromillusion. House of Colors also has a version. This paint is VERY expensive, but does come in quite a variety of color combinations. It is also nearly impossible to touch up if you damage a panel, since you would need to get the paint to lay in exactly the same direction as when painted originally in order for the paint to change color in the same manner.

Thanks Blue,.....I thought it would be more to it than going a littlem wild with spray paint.
After the primer & all, I'm I suppose to sand the paint between coats or just layer on light coats?
Also, how many coats would it take for a decent job?

BaL,......now THAT'S a ride:rockon:
I've thought about switching out the baby 8 for a 350 in mine, then I see 68's,........

Yeah thanks alot. Its got a 350 in it. It needs some work, I am going to have it painted, and get a semi-rebuild done to the engine. I am gunna get a new carb and mantifold in it. Also a completely new exhaust system. It has been in the familt for a long time. I think I am gunna paint it a silver color, and get the torque thrust II's for it. Check out my webpage. members.cardomain.com/68fbird. The paint isnt as good as it looks, and oh yeah it has 63,000 original miles and the engine is all original!
