Removing headliners
Removing headliners
Hi-
How do you drop the headliner so you can reglue/recover it? I know I'll have to drop the visors, dome light and the rear plastic panel, but how do you remove the plastic trim strips that go along the glass?
Thanks!
David

the T-top versions just unscrew at the top and you pop them off. I think for the hard top version you have to carefully pop off the plastic trim piece.
I would recommend this order:
-remove light
-remove the clothes hooks & speaker panals
-pop off the seatbelt plastic trim piece
-remmove screws from sail panels
-take shoulder-belt and remove it from the slot, put it on the outside of the headliner.
-remove 4 screews from rear trim piece along rear window.
-remove trim pieces from around doors
-remove sunvisors (3 screws each)
-remove headliner.
I think I got everything thats what I remmember.

Thanks, okfoz- at least that gives me an idea as to what to look for as to how those trim pieces fit. I wasn't sure how they'd have those installed. I'll use your list and just go slow at it.
BTW it's a hardtop, not a T-top so I wouldn't think it'd be that hard to remove (famous last words, I know...

If you break the slots in the trim pieces where the clips that hold them in go, don't sweat. Here's what I did. Get all the clips out of the car. If you break those, its about $11 for a bag of 10 at the dealer. I took the clips and crazy glued them at the ends of the slots in the trim. OK so a little ghetto. I just hope I never have to do my headliner again.

The a-pillar cover is held to the car with two types of fasteners. Along the a-pillar itself, there are either 1 or two of the same fastener that's used to hold your door panel on. It's the standard trim fastener, and to disconnect the pillar cover from the pillar, just pull the pillar towards the middle of the car. To disconnect the pillar cover from the top of the car is a bit easier.
You need to slide the pillar cover to the front of the car. This will release it from the white locking tabs. It'll be hard to slide the pillar frontwards, but yep, it's possible.
To get the pillar cover back up, you have two options. First option is to put the pillar cover a bit far forward, and slide it back onto the tabs. That'll take forever, and you'll have a hell of a time with it. The second option is the one I favor. Use a sharp awl to carefully pry the white tabs out of their slots in the roof. They're locked in by a "Z" shaped piece of plastic, you'll see what I mean. Go easy and slow with them!! They've been cooking in the sun for almost 20 years, they're a bit brittle.
When you've got 'em all out, slide them into their spots in the pillar cover. Then, just line the pillar cover up with the slots in the roof, and push the pillar cover straight up so the tabs snap in.
The headliner is held to the roof above the dashboard by three of those same locking clips. The difference now is that they're easy to slide out. You have to push the headliner (I think) to the front of the car to disengage the 3 clips from the roof, then the headliner falls down. If you're recovering the fiberglass board, be careful while taking it out of the car.
