note that while the actuators may interchange, the brackets that hold the actuator to the door may not. such is the case with the chevy s10.
had started to write up an article on power door lock retrofit, but hasn't been finished yet:

both passenger & driver side door lock actuators interchange.
actuators can and do fail. but often the problem is lack of lubrication, see the page mentioned above for some details on this topic.
are other odd problems that thirdgens have with lock actuators too. for instance, the metal electrical terminals become corroded and don't conduct anymore, can scrape off the corrosion as a temp fix. also, the rivets that hold the lock actuator to the door sometimes become loose causing erratic door lock operation. pull the door panel to check for sure.
