From: "No one cares if you're in before the lock!" - Best quote ever.
Is the mechanism just in the 'down' position? I had that happen before..take a screwdriver, there's a small release button that brings the motor back up when you push it..hope this helps.

Yeah, it may just be stuck down. If its broken, look up member Lonsal, he sells repaired ones, remanufactured ones, and parts for them that are reinforced to prevent breaking again. Mine just crapped out too, so I'm going to be buying somethin from him.

I stock the 3 parts that commonly fail on the 86-91 hatch pull-down units. 1) Motor housings. This is the part that your Father broke. I reinforce new GM motor housings with 4 specially formed pieces of aluminum and epoxy. 2) Gear Nuts. If the motor continues to run, yet the latch portion doesn't move up and down, then the gear nut has shredded it's teeth. 3) Replacement nylon guide kits. This kit contains 4 new guides, a new push nut and detailed instructions. The guides are machined of solid nylon, are a direct drop-in replacement and much stronger than the OEM injection molded disaster they replace. Soon I will also be stocking "repaired" and "remanufactured" hatch pull-down units. The difference is, a repaired unit has been rebuilt with a new reinforced motor housing, gear nut and guides. A remanufactured unit includes a new motor in addition to these new parts and includes a warranty. E-mail me at topdownsolutions@yahoo.com and I will e-mail you my current Price List. Lon
