I am going to KILL myself!

Well I shattered it again! This time it was me

I had just finished putting my old '88 "Shorty" Wing decklid back on, along with a brand new hatch shock and was closing it to finish the job and it just shattered ??? ???

I had replaced my hood shocks when i bought in August and the last time it blew it busted one of those, it couldn't hold the weight anmore and was bent. Bought another shock an this time it bent the new one, I DIDN'T EVEN GET TO CLOSE THE HATCH ALL THE WAY BEFORE THAT $40 WAS RUINED!!!! It bent the shaft that time and i don't know if I can fix that...

I think maybe i tightened the bolts down too hard?

It was an index of 105 out there, boy that was hot...

Windows were down and tees where off...

MAN THIS BLOWS, OFF TO GO GET ANOTHER ONE...

I AM GETTING THE HATCH FROM THE TRANS AM, CURIOUS HOW THAT WILL LOOK (If it don't look good, i got two other decklids ) :hail: Wrap-Around T/A Wing :hail:

dont feel bad

the other shock may not be as stong as the new one, in this case applying preasure to the deck lid to push it down would cause one side to go down easier, twisting the hatch.. which shatters it.... look into that... as for the TA hatch.. its the same... i have an 86 Firebird hatch w/ the short wing holes in it on my 84 camaro.... i need to swap the deck lids however so that my car looks slightly normal.. dif color & i like my old 3 pice set up.... by the way.. how hard is it to swap the deck lid?

Man, you should stay away from deck lids. Maybe get a fiberglass one. j/k

Back to science class

IF you take 1 pound per Square Inch thats 2304 Pounds of pressure pressing outward on our hatch area. 3psi would be 6912 lbs of pressure... Blow it out, you bet your butt, I think it might even total the car parked behind you (not really)...

Ok, the thinking with this is correct. My question is why then don't the side windows, T-tops, and windshield blow out too? How is the hatch latch able to hold down such a force? Because, the issue that we are facing here is not total resultant force, it is stress. Stress is measured in PSI, so the pressure inside a vessel is related to the stress in the vessel based on it's geometry. Secondly we have to look at the mechanics of the car and ask ourselves, Can the car actually hold pressure? I believe it can hold dynamic pressure, such as waves, to an extent. I do not believe that it can hold a constant pressure. Even with perfect weather stripping, there are still openings to the engine bay, and through the HVAC system. Another question is this: How much vacuum is applied ot the hatch going down the road? I am willing to assume that it is in the 1 psi or greater area. Why doesn't the hatch fly off then? I don't think either of us is 100% right, but I'd be more inclined to believe thermal stress rather than the pressure in the car failed it.

um

if you were refering to what i had said right abouve your post.... (other shock being weaker than the new on) that was for an explination to the new hatch getting cooked.... your absolutly right about the 1st one however.. age & stress + heat & Presure = BOOM!

aiight, this post is longer than hell and im waaay to lazy to read em all..so here's my 2 cents in hopes no one else said it..back when i used to work for ford we had that happen on a ford exploder..i mean explorer..newho..the dumbass turn on the rear defogger, (i know urs is broke), when combined w/the heat of the day and he shut it w/all the windows up, it caused the back window to blow out..basically the window was so hot it was no longer sturdy..im bettin somethin along those lines happened to yours too..hope it gives some insight

Everyone, go outside and open your car door, Look at the pillar where the strike bolt is (the thing the door latches onto). There's a black vent looking thing there. Know what that does? It lets the pressure out. Don't believe me, take off all the interior panels you'll find a cavity that goes all the way to the back into the rear 'glove box' and spare tire area. Take off the vent thing and look at the little rubber 'check' valves. They let air out but not in.

It wasn't a pressure build up that broke your window. I would guess that it was more than likly thermal stress. Maybe some metal that is contacting the window is misaligned. As the temp goes up, the metal will expand placing an extremly large force on a localized area. Think about those little window busting pens they sell. If your hinge mounts are crooked and touching the glass, or any other bolt then the glass will be trying to keep metal from expanding...guess which material will lose that battle.

actually, those may "apear" to be one peice, but it is actually three you can seethe crease where they bolt together!

the ones on ebay are the same three peice design, just bolted together!

FYI - thats the "mass produced" design of louvers that circa 95% of people that have aftermarket louvers have! They are all three peices.

Look in the pics closer yourself, you'll see the creases where they bolt together!

if you're gonna get technical on me, count all the installation hardware as pieces too i meant that it's more like 1 continuous peice rather than the 3 seperate sections on yours

i dunno

i think they did, but the 86 year is the questionable one... i think a few got the old slam system & the rest got the power pull... my friends 89 had been switched to the slam system (im almost positive) but it throws a loop into the subject....

as i said in my other post, i was pulling it down and it shattered before I could get it to the power pulldown. I never slam it. H#ll i hate when i press the power relaease and it goes "slaming" up! hehehe, that doesn't happen anymore with that heavy T/A wrap around on there!
