this may be a stupid question but ill ask anyways just incase.

when i have the defog on, the heat blows really good and hot, but when i turn it to vents, it just blows cold. is that because it actually is a vent and takes air from outside or my car is busted. AND how the hell did the heat work without a HCV in my 84 z28? Or is it just constantly flowing.

umm.. not really..

when the defoger for the windshield is on, and i have the heat all the way up, its hot, normally. But when i turn it to vents (so its blowing at my face) its cold, even with the heat all the way up., is it supposed to do this or not.

i think theres a vacume line or a switch that controls the flap or whatever it is that directs the air from the blower motor thru the heater core

ok, from easiest to hardest...

1. check the heater diverter valve mentioned in the begining of the post. look at the vaccuum like and check the vacuum line on it.

2. take out your hvac and check the vac. lines behind it. check for leaks.

3. check your lever on the back of the Hvac and see if the clips are connected.

Heater Control Valve WARNING!

PLEASE! Somebody post a large warning on one of the main pages on this subject. I have read several posts here wherein people say they actually got burned by moving the heater control valve. Well the SAME THING happened to me on my daughter's 92 RS. I was looking into an overheating problem and saw a small leak. When I moved a heater hose, YEP SAME THING! the D*** thing blew up all over me! Hot antifreeze AIN'T NO FUN! Pleqase someone of authority, POST a Warning. THANKS!

From: pgh,pa,
I have already replaced this valve last winter when i rebuilt the motor, but the new one appears to be leaking, i really hate the clutter this adds to my engine plus how much harder it makes it to remove the passenger side valve cover. i had thouhgt about relocating it but if i can just remove it all together and bypass it that would be great. I already removed the A/C.

Jim85Iroc : do u have any pictures of what u did to bypass it? to my understanding all i have to do is run a hose from the front of my intake to the firewall and run the other hose from the radiator to the firewall, is this correct?

thanks

Matt

84Z, yeah, you don't have one of these diverter valves. I don't either. Started in '87. Your coolant path is like mine, constantly flowing thru the heater core. Have you checked your coolant level lately? If you run really low on coolant, you won't get heat out of the heater, even though the engine temp gauge will be at "hot". Think of a BIG pipe with a trickle of water running through it... that's "low on coolant". The big pipe's representing your heater core.

This is one big topic. My 82 didn't come with one(that's already been covered). The only advantage is the possibility that the AC 'might' work a little bit better without flow through the heater core. Keep in mind that when you switch to a/c no air is circulated through the heater core, so no heat is added to the air coming out of the vents. However, the heater core is in close proximity to the path the A/C air follows, so some heat may transfer. IMO, having the valve looks as though it's more of a problem than it's worth. Ditch the valve and you will have one less thing to worry about.
