Hood & Hatch strut part numbers & alternates

Hey all,

I'm looking to replace the hood and hatch struts/lifts/supports on my '87 IROC.

Looks like part numbers are as follows:

Hood:
GM# 14019157
AC Delco# 510-305

Hatch:
GM# 16604426
AC Delco# 510-510

Anybody know if these are correct? Are the AC Delco & GM parts identical?

Only place I've found them listed online is gmpartsdirect, but they are pretty expensive.

I ran a search on the boards and found that some people used parts from AutoZone or PartsAmerica. Any idea on the part numbers & brands on these items? Are they strong enough to hold the hatch & hood? Do they fit right in using the same fittings and are they the correct size/length???

I don't mind the 3rd party items as long as they're a direct replacement (and can hold the incredible mass that is the hatch!)

Thanks in advance!

Do not get GM hood or hatch struts. They are too expensive and fail after a short time. My original hood struts lasted 1-1/2 yrs. I replaced them with GM ones. Again 1-1/2 years later they wouldn't hold up the hood. I purchased ProLift brand hood struts from Pep Boys at that time. They have a lifetime warranty. They STILL hold up the hood (admittedly a bit weaker now) over 7 years later. I recommend getting aftermarket struts from your auto parts store that have a lifetime warranty. Also for the rear hatch, get the ones for the heaviest rear spoiler and rear window wiper motor. They will be a lot stronger. I replaced the rear struts (again ProLift brand) on my 88 IROC 2 years ago. They still push the hatch up right away fully when you release the hatch by key or with the solenoid.

Thanks Lon!

I haven't checked Pep Boys yet, but do you know the part numbers or sizes that fit? Are the fittings/attachments the same, so it's an even swap?

Thanks for the information, it sounds like the way to go, especially with the warranty!

Pep Boys ProLift hatch strut number: 0-37495-92002 (from my receipt) $37.99 ea. I purchased these in 5/00. I called PB recently. They said they have changed brands of struts. They still have a lifetime warranty though. I haven't had a chance to verify this in the store yet.

You can go to autozone too. I have an extra job with them and thats where I got mine replaced. They were so strong I had to keep the hatch from shooting up on its own.LOL theyre about 35-40 buck s for the back pair and about 20-25 for the front

Wow! Thanks guys! :hail:

I have both stores close by so I have options. I was just worried that the parts wouldn't be strong enough to hold the hood or especially the hatch. I use a golf club right now and it looks like it's going to snap anyday.

And the lifetime warranty is a big bonus!

Re: Hood & Hatch strut part numbers & alternates

I put Autozone's on my 88 less than 2 years ago and they've failed. The IROC has been mostly stored in the garage the past year so those shocks/hood struts shood have lasted much longer. I wish there was a way to adapt and make it so that there were double struts on each side; these are hella heavy hoods! Nitro

Same here, Autozones 2 1/2 years ago and already failed. Mine has been in climate controlled storage.

Sounds like a good product for TDS to offer.
