Hey i just got an idea... the door skins on our cars can come iff right..?

If they can i think for weight reduction (a little at least) and protection could you put on some fiberglass door skins or even better un dentable door skins like the saturns? This way it would be a little lighter you could run w/o body mouldings and feel safer and still use glass windows.

Comments..? Do you guys think its possible? Remeber its just an idea and i have no idea how to get the door skin off or how to do this though.

This sounds like something you need to talk to Gumby about between your weight reduction and his twin 2.8L ideas you two would have one hell of a fast ride

i was going more for the undentable part heh

just think though do you ever remember seeing a saturn after anything more imposing than a parking lot door ding, it's not pretty especially in the cold months

Do you really think that the thicker than metal plastic is going to weigh all that much less than the 'ultra-heavy' duty 20ga sheetmetal (insert sarcasim) doorskins that they are already made out of ?
Trust me, as much as people p-ss & moan about the weight of 3rdgen doors, they are lightwieght compared to many 2 door cars of thier age and older.
Sadly, comprimises in part quality(i.e. hinges) is what causes the door sag on these cars, not solely weight.

While those pictures are neat and all. I'm sure there are circumstances outside the norm of standard traffic accidents that caused them. Also, out of all the pictures, 2, maybe 3, showed a side impact which, at the speed they were probably done at, no amount of bracing would have helped out making the link, aside from the amusement factor if you into others misfortune, worthless to the topic.
Regardless, no matter what the outer skin is made from, it is all merely cosmetic. The bracing undeneath (i.e. impact bars/whatever you want to call them) is what is designed to take the force of a side impact (i.e. the better part of added weight in doors).
