It could be an out-of-balance tire. Ever hit a mean pothole? Thats enough to knock a tire out of balance.

Have you checked your tires for any knots? My old 88dynasty had a right front tire with a knot and the steering wheel would shake a little bit.

A front end shimmy is usually achievd by a front end component that's either bad or out of spec. The tie rod ends could be worn, the wheel bearings may need repacking/replaced, the idler arm could be worn, the control arm bushings could be worn, etc. Basically anything front suspension related or tire related can cause the shimmy up front

put both sides of the front of the car on jackstands....grab the wheel at 3:00 and 9:00 and shake back and fourth, make sure the key is off, if the other side moves as much as your tire moves or your tire doesnt move at all, your set. if it moves from side to side, you should check your bearings. these aren't hard to replace, if you dont have time or feel confident enough to replace them, you can remove the wheel, take off the little center cap, and tighten the bolt, that should help. check the other side for the same thing. if it is Still loose, move it back and fourth like before, and watch all the bushings, the idler arms etc. if they are moving, you need new ones.
now grab it at 12:00 and 6:00, and move it up and down (shaking back and fourth) if thats moving, check your bushings and the rest of the front end. might be idler arms or something, sometimes a good lube job can help

if nothing is loose and your stearing wheel and dash still vibrate, you have an out of round tire. sometimes a bent rim can do it (if you have ever blown a tire on any of those rims, check them. if vibration presists...remove one of the front tires, put it on a level serfice (garage floor) and roll it. if it hops and goes all over the place, that could be your problem, if it dont hop, try the other one. in the event you find a tire out of round, and you cant buy new tires, move the out of round tire to the right rear that way you wont feel it as much, and itll allow you to handle better.
i had the same problem and it turns out my bearings were loose, and i had a tire out of round.
after this if it still vibrates, get an alignment. check your tires for alignment wear. if you dont feel like doing everything else, take off the fron tires, check them for roundness, then if they/one are out of round, move them to the back, worse tire should always be at right rear.
any questions, reply and ill help you to the best of my ability.

thanks

mike
