85 MPH speedo to 120 MPH speedo

Hey everyone....

Got an 87 Firebird with a 305... my first project car.

Can I swap my 85 MPH gauge cluster with one that has a 120 MPH speedo in it with out any problems (plug and play) or do I have to replace any sending units?

Thanks in advance...
-Gus

You have an electric spdo. I think you can just replace the cluster and with no mods. Plug and play.

I'd double check that. I was under the impression that the 85 mph speedos were still mechanical. I don't recall specifically what firebird models were electric and which were mechanical, and when each style switched over.

My 86 with the 85mph was mechanical. but there is some way of switching them that I read here a long time ago. since I didn't do the swap I didn't pay attention. Do a search and you will find tons of info on the 85 mph speedo.

I have the same delema....85 MPH speedo. I've searched, and it seems that everyone just replaces the entire gage cluster. They're supposedly identical up to 1989 (cept w/140 speedo).

I'd be at the junkyard getting mine now if it wasn't so d*mn cold!
